In 2008, a two-year-old girl by the name of Caylee Anthony went missing in Orlando. Casey Anthony, her mother, did not report the disappearance to the authorities for 31 days. Even though Anthony was accused of first-degree murder of her child, she was eventually declared not guilty by the court. It has been more than ten years since this bizarre and terrifying case caught the attention of the entire country. What has Casey Anthony been up to since those days?
Her Relationship With Her Attorney
Below is a photo of Casey Anthony and her lawyer Jose Baez. His fame saw a lot of growth as the high-profile trial was going on. However, is it true that he got more than just recognition for his services? A private investigator claimed that, in exchange for his legal services, he asked Casey Anthony for sex. The scandals do not end there since Casey was also linked to someone else on her legal counsel. These things raise more questions, so it is necessary to put it all into context. After all, this could change things.
A Party Girl
Anthony had a reputation as a party girl. The trial showed the way she liked to indulge in all sorts of inappropriate fun. It was shocking to hear that she even went partying after her child went “missing.”
Caylee Anthony Disappeared
Caylee Anthony disappeared sometime in June 2008. It was only on July 15 that Cindy, her grandmother, alerted the police. She told them that she had not seen her grandchild in 31 days. In that span of time, Cindy asked her daughter Casey to see Caylee. However, the mother remained evasive and only replied that she was either busy or the little girl was with her nanny.
A Foul Odor
At last, things changed when George, Casey’s dad, got to the tow yard. He was there to fetch his daughter’s car. He noticed that there was a strong but odd odor that came from the back of this car. He said it smelled just like a decomposing body.
Lying To The Police
When the authorities arrived and questioned Casey, she lied to them. She said that the little girl had been abducted by her nanny on June 9. But why did she not tell the police, if this were the case? She said that she felt “scared” and had been looking for her daughter desperately.
The Non-existent ‘Nanny’
Casey gave the name of their supposed nanny: Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez. They managed to track down a person with this name, but this lead eventually got dismissed. After all, the real Fernandez-Gonzalez had not met Casey nor Caylee.
Catching National Attention
The case caught the attention of the nation as people jumped to the conclusion that the toddler was killed by her mother. Did she try to brush it all under the rug? This was when all the pieces, or the lack thereof, began to come together…
No Physical Evidence
There was a lack of physical evidence in this case. For one thing, the body of the girl was still missing. It made things blurry. However, things changed when something happened in December. What was it?
Her Remains Surface
After the police got tipped off twice, a groundskeeper was able to help locate the remains of the little girl in December 2018. They found her decomposing body, which also came with a strip of duct tape, in the woods near the house of the Anthony family.
The Duct Tape
It was at this point that the case started to get even more attention. If you asked any onlooker who paid attention to the story, they would tell you that Casey Anthony almost certainly killed Caylee.
A Media Sensation
Even before her trial started, Casey Anthony was already getting tried and convicted in the unofficial court of public opinion. She was calm and could lie to the police easily. There was also testimony that she was out partying when Caylee was missing! It did not help that she seemed cold in front of the cameras.
Odd Family Dynamic
The trial of Casey Anthony proved to be a big ratings draw for many networks. Some psychologists claimed that the bizarre dynamic of the Anthony family was central to all the drama that ensued.
Her Early Life
Casey Anthony was only 19 years old when she got pregnant with Caylee. Initially, she lied to her folks about the pregnancy and even insisted that she was a virgin until then. Back then, it was not clear who the father of her baby was. Jesse Grund, her fiancé at the time, assumed that he was the father. However, DNA tests have since revealed that this was not the case.
Leaving Her Parents
Caylee and Casey lived at Cindy and George’s house for the first few years. In 2008, Casey moved in with Tony Lazzaro, her boyfriend at the time. It led to the strange behavior that many observed during the span of the court case. According to Cindy, this was the time that Casey came up with a fake nanny called “Zanny” and claimed that the toddler was with this woman whenever she checked in on Caylee.
The prosecution tried to paint a picture of Casey Anthony. They tried to show her as a mother who was not willing to commit to parenthood or give up her partying lifestyle. Many things hinged on her personality since they did not have much physical evidence to tie her into the crime scene.
The physical evidence and odd smell from the trunk of her car ended up being pivotal for the prosecution. After they found traces of chloroform and evidence of human decomposition there, the prosecutors held onto these pieces of evidence. This was how they tried to prove that Casey Anthony had a hand in the death of her daughter.
Their Version Of Events
According to the prosecution, Casey Anthony must have used chloroform to make Caylee lose consciousness. She must have then placed duct tape over the nose and mouth to suffocate the poor girl. Unconscious and tied up, Caylee was put into the trunk of the car. She allegedly partially decomposed there before she was hidden in the woods behind the home of Cindy and George.
What did the defense have to say about the fact that Casey was partying when her daughter was already missing? They said that it showed a woman who was trying to stay calm despite a very trying situation.
When the trial was going on, the defense claimed that the Anthony family was very dysfunctional. They alleged that George Anthony sexually abused Casey in her youth. Her counsel claimed that this trauma is what made her act in seemingly suspicious ways. They attributed her penchant for lying, partying, and even her overt sexuality to this.
When the defense made those claims of abuse, George testified that nothing like that ever happened. The judge chastised the defense and instructed them not to bring up these accusations ever again. However, it is possible that this influenced the verdict since the jury was still able to hear these claims.
If you ask the defense, their version of events includes Caylee accidentally drowning in the pool behind the Anthony home. After that, George must have told Casey that she would face jail time for child neglect if word got out and helped her get rid of the body in the forest behind their house. They claimed that it explains why Casey behaved so nonchalantly in the month that followed Caylee’s disappearance.
The verdict was handed in on July 5, 2011. The jurors found Casey Anthony not guilty of the charge of murder. The reasons for this would be the lack of physical evidence and clarity from the prosecution.
Ultimately, Casey Anthony was sentenced to only four years of prison time. She received a year for each charge of lying to the authorities. Those were the only ones, after all, for which she was found guilty. If she was found guilty of murdering Caylee, she would have been locked up forever.
OJ Simpson Trial
This case has been compared to the OJ Simpson murder trial in the ‘90s. It was also a high-profile court case that ended with a loss for the prosecution. Casey Anthony might have been found guilty for lying to the police, but it did not extend to the murder of her daughter. The public was surprised and outraged.
Ten Years Later
Casey Anthony has largely shied away from the spotlight since then. She has offered very few interviews and barely appeared in public. She has a recognizable face thanks to her high-profile court trial, so it is not surprising that she is trying to live a low-key life now.
Casey Anthony is now 34 years old. She lives in South Florida. She lives in the home of Patrick McKenna. He was the private investigator who took the lead in the investigations of her defense team.
A Normal Life
Even though she is living with him, Casey Anthony says that they are not in a romantic relationship. However, she is trying to get out there again. Her recognizability must make dating harder than usual.
There are anonymous sources allegedly close to Casey who have news about her. She wants to get another kid. As you can imagine, this piece of information has made a lot of people nervous.
According to certain sources, Casey Anthony has not been close to her parents after everything that took place during her trial. Everyone found out about her neglect for her daughter as well as her dad’s affair during the trial. During the years that followed that, Casey and her parents barely stayed in touch.
On the air with Dr. Oz, her father admitted that he was prepared to take his life after he found out that his grandchild was dead. He took the contents of a Paxil bottle and then mixed it with alcohol and muscle relaxers. By then, he was ready to end his life.
George Anthony recently got injured in a vehicular accident. Even though he and Casey had limited communication after the trial, his daughter still reached out to him to make sure that he was all right.
Ready To Forgive
He almost died in a severe car crash. That was a turning point for George Anthony, who decided that he had to forgive her. His letter to hear read, “Casey, no matter what, I’m still your dad and I love you.”
Getting Away With It
What happened to little Caylee Anthony remains a mystery. While Casey was found not guilty, a lot of people believe that she knows way more about the truth than she is letting on. There is a chance that we will never know if the death of the toddler was an accident, a murder, or something else.
Caylee Anthony Today
How old would Caylee Anthony be if her tragic death did not happen? It is quite sad to think that she would have celebrated her 14th birthday on the 9th of August 2019. Yes, she would have been a tween!
Casey Anthony has kept the identity of her daughter’s father a secret. However, a woman has stepped forward and said that her son must be the father of the poor girl. Who could it be?
His Identity At Last
According to Donna Maclean, her son Michael Duggan is the real dad of Caylee Anthony. Sadly, he passed away in 2007. After seeing photos of the little girl on TV, a lightbulb went off in her head. Even though she is probably the paternal grandmother of Caylee, Donna does not plan to seek out Casey.
In 1996, there was a case that was quite similar to the Caylee Anthony case. Darlie Routier’s two kids were killed with a knife. She called 911 and informed operators that their house was broken into by an intruder who stabbed her kids, attacked her, and fled. Eight days after this, Routier put on a small birthday celebration for what would have been her son Devon’s 7th birthday. She even sprayed silly string on the grave! She was found guilty for the murder of her two kids and now awaits lethal injection in a penitentiary in Texas. A lot of people believe that the media portrayed her harshly, especially when it came to the birthday party she threw at her son’s grave.
In the same year, there was a young girl called JonBenet Ramsay who was murdered in her Colorado home. They found a long, handwritten ransom note inside her room. Many suspected that her former beauty queen mom Patsy Ramsay killed her. However, it has remained unsolved. It is an open investigation in Boulder to this day!
In May 2007, three-year-old Madeline McCann disappeared from a resort in Portugal. She had been on holiday with her parents, Kate and Gerry. The international media gave the duo hell. On top of this, they were heavily suspected of wrongdoing in the disappearance of their daughter. In 2008, the Portuguese authorities absolved the couple of any suspicion. However, the case of the disappearance is still unsolved.
