Chip and Joanna Gaines found out that they had it in them to turn a huge profit by improving other people’s homes! This talented couple star in the HGTV show Fixer Upper. When it was time to work on a home of their own, things simply were not the same. It ended up being somewhat different from what they had in mind… For one thing, it took them 18 whole months to finish the job. The result will astound you!
The Fixer Upper Couple
The couple might have a reputation for renovating homes, but did you know how romantic their story happens to be? The two of them grew up in the same state and even went to the same college. Even though they had three years between them, the couple managed to meet in Texas in 2001.
After Chip saw a photograph of her in the shop her father owned, he knew she was the one for him! It was a good thing that his instincts turned out to be right. The two tied the knot in 2003. Both of them knew the time would come to work on a place they could call their own.
A Tiny Farmhouse
In 2012, they bought a little farmhouse for themselves. It was nothing more than a two-bedroom home that had an attic. It was simply too small of a place for the six members of their family. However, they were not all that concerned about its size.
What they fixated more on had been the land the farmhouse had been resting on. It came with amazing oak trees that surrounded the home and made the property all the more irresistible. Joanna and Chip knew they needed to get some work done on the farmhouse, but how could they possibly turn such a small space into something that could accommodate all six family members?
Committing To The Project
The couple did not know this project was going to take them 18 long months. Aside from the big project, Chip and Joanna also had to split their time to work on other renovation projects as well.
The husband and wife made a lot of interesting discoveries when they were renovating the home. They found paperwork all the way from 1895! It was hard to say how old the farmhouse was. However, she fell in love with the idea that the house boasted of a story as well.
Ready At Last
It was an entire year and a half before the house was ready for them. In October of 2013, the family of six moved into the farmhouse.
Joanna had hoped to maintain the old house’s character as much as they could during the renovation process. This is the reason they only added a single extended structure. They decided that the extension should serve as the master bedroom. Despite everything, nothing could have prevented Joanna from putting amazing fixtures and fittings to achieve the farmhouse of her dreams.
They decided on a color scheme of white and neutral colors for the farmhouse. Joanna discussed their choices in detail on the blog they created specifically for the renovation of the property.
The two of them managed to retain the exterior of the farmhouse. It still looked as classic and traditional as could be after they added a lovely white finish to go with the wooden beams. The oak trees outside, the first thing to grab their attention, helped make the little house even more appealing.
A Look Inside
Joanna and Chip Gaines decided to use a neutral palette for the interiors. This way, they knew the inside would match the outside. The lovely double doors open to a bright and roomy entrance hall decorated with a color scheme of grey and white.
Now, it is not really a surprise that the interior of the farmhouse looks so gorgeous. What else can we expect from the talented Joanna, after all? The accents and decors like the metal coat rack and script wall art only amplify the atmosphere of the space!
Creating A Flow
Chip and Joanne were aware that it was important to make the interior design flow in there without pushing the limit. In the end, they had to knock down some walls and then restructure the layout.
It is no secret that the kitchen can make for a selling point of aby house. This is why the couple ended up using white tilling or the ceiling. They also added black fittings and fixtures for some contrast! We love the addition of the breakfast bar, which serves as a place the family can dine in.
Lounge And Diner Included
The couple decided to add a diner and lounge on the other end of the room. The multi-purpose space only shows us how well-planned the interior of the house was. The dining table is big enough to accommodate everyone in the family. The comfy couch is also a great place to relax after a long day.
The accessories were picked out and then placed to go with the design plan. Truly, we cannot find a single thing that looks out of place in this multi-purpose space. Joanna’s Magnolia Market is a very popular place where she sells her accessories and furnishings. We can now see the success is deserved!
When you take a closer look at this lounge area, it is easy to notice just how calming the furnishings and designs are. At the end of the day, the home is the place for relaxation. It is important to consider this!
The lounge area might be very functional, but it is also incredibly charming. Well, this was to be expected when you consider who we are dealing with here!
All over the farmhouse, you will find the finishing touches they added. They were great additions because everything, from the ornate flower vase to the lovely lamps, ties the design together without a hitch.
Many of the finishing touches are available at the Magnolia Market, so you can buy them both online and offline. Joanna likes to share her incredible knack at design. What better place to show off this skill than in her own home?
Chip And Joanna’s Master Room
Although the master room was not built into the farmhouse, the whole who has undergone the repair and renovation needed to suit the needs of the family.
Joanna opted to install old doors to bring out the classic appeal of the home. On top of that, she also kept the original attic flooring to maintain the rustic charm of the place. However, there is no denying the fact that the beautiful bed in the room takes the cake here.
The couple often has a lot of things on their plate, which is perfectly understandable. The two of them have several businesses to run and a spin-off show to take care of. We are amazed they even get the chance to relax every now and then!
When the time to relax and breath finally comes, the couple likes to spend a lot of time in the cozy and charming room they have made for themselves. In the winter, the fireplace helps keep the home warm.
The En-Suite Bathroom
Take a look at what lies inside the lovely en suite bathroom of the master bedroom. That free-standing tub is simply stunning, which also goes for the other touches in the room.
The bathroom door itself functions as a lovely accent piece on its own. Joanna took the task of searching for old doors to go with the design very seriously. The vibe of the door was further amplified by the black lantern fixtures in there.
A Glimpse Inside
There are his and hers sinks inside the master bathroom. Aside from that, let us not forget about the impressive bathtub and incredible chandelier. How stunning is this?!
We do not doubt that the two of them stuck to the neutral color scheme because the bathroom goes well with the way the rest of the home looks. Yes, folks – the bathroom can also be turned into a lovely place where one can relax after slaving away at work.
The Girls Room
Chip and Joanna have two daughters between them: Emmie Kay and Ella Rose. The couple made sure to make the best possible room for their princesses. They deserve only the very best!
While other people might go for a lot of pinks, Joanna decided to stick to her color scheme of neutral colors. She went with a mostly white palette, which only made the small accent pieces even more charming. Just take a look at the dollhouse if you need any proof whatsoever.
The Boys Room
Joanna and Chip have three sons as well. After they welcomed Crew Gaines in June 2018, the couple gave birth to their kids in a boy-girl-boy pattern. How interesting is that?
Their oldest son is called Drake, who is 13 years old. The next oldest son is Duke, who is 10 years old. The room for the boys comes with an adventure theme and enough space to play around in. The extra bed there might be a sign that they want another boy in the future, but it might also be for a friend!
The boys have a lot of things to do even from the comfort of their bedroom. There is a huge map on the wall, which is a great way to show their interest in adventures. The various ladders there also look fun!
Joanna and Chip stuck with the neutral color scheme in every corner of the home. The room for the boys was no exception either. The couple ensured that it is more than suitable for young people. Moreover, they also went out of their way to provide ample space for more physical endeavors.
All For The Love Of Family
It is easy to see that Chip and Joanna worked hard to make their home as comfortable and peaceful as it could be. They knew that they and the children deserved the best. You only need to check out Joanna’s social media accounts and scroll through her posts to see that she adores her family more than anyone.
Her Instagram account is full of adorable family photos that show us just how much she loves them. It is also easy to see that this is a family that enjoys going on fun-filled adventures. Aside from this, you will see even more family photos displayed on the walls should you ever get the chance to pay their farmhouse a visit. The black and white photos have been arranged to go with the design of the home.
The couple added incredibly eccentric details to the home as well. Take their coffee bar, for example. There is no need for Chip and Joanna to stop at a coffee shop to get their fix.
This coffee bar shows their love for the taste of coffee. Aside from that, it also goes to show the love they have for each other. Clearly, they appreciate the opportunity to be comfortable in their home. We would honestly kill to have such a stylish coffee bar in our own home. We’re so jealous!
Kiddies Craft Space
You do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that Joanna and Chip like crafty things. How could they not make a craft room for the kids? The room is the place to be if you want to express yourself.
The craft room for the children is located in the attic, which makes it even more ideal for them to unleash their emotions. This space is great when they need to work on an artsy project. The space does not have as much white and light furniture like the other rooms in the house, so this is perfect.
Another Crafty Space
Of course, a single crafty was not going to be enough for such a big and artistic family. Joanna needed to have a craft room for herself too! We can understand this since she had a lot of big projects to work on.
She takes on a number of exciting projects that range from home designs and decoration creation. She sells a lot of stuff on the Magnolia Market store, so check that out. We can only assume that a lot of creative thoughts get channeled into the charming room.
Here is a view of the lovely family farmhouse from the outside. This is the place they call home, where they entertain their visitors and relax whenever they possibly could.
The exterior space is great for gatherings and spending time together. You can also find a repurposed barn and a fire pit. We like the dining set, which must be great for family brunches or dinner parties! The Gaines family sure has a lot of brilliant ideas that make the place such a delightful space.
Life On A Farm
The property on which the small farmhouse rests comes with 40 acres of land. The couple already has plans on how to maximize the land. They plan to plant trees of all kinds over the lot! Moreover, they also want to bring a lot of animals to the property as well.
They have since transformed the property into the perfect farm home. There is a chicken coop on the property as well as a silo, which will probably be occupied soon. Chip and Jo worked to maintain the traditional look of the farmhouse to ensure that it complemented the natural beauty outside of it.
Outside the house, you will see an amazing greenhouse. It is one of the best features of the property. This means that the family can grow whatever they want because of this area.
The couple is free to choose and then grow their favorite plants, from vegetables to flowering plants. It is an excellent place for them to teach the kids the wonders of flora. We can only wish we had one too!
Relaxing On The Porch
The Gaines family is going to enjoy the warm evenings spent on the beautiful porch. They made sure this area also carries the original look of the farmhouse.
This photo shows Joanna looking cozy with their newest family member, Crew. We can only assume that she spends a lot of days staring into the beauty she gets to call her yard!
All over the house, the couple decided to put up various art pieces. The various saying is such a great way to express the thoughts they have about life and family.
These words can be seen in the entrance hall, and they explain how Chip and Jo cherish the way they decided to decorate all the rooms in the house. They have a pretty big family, but this did not stop them from showing off the distinct personalities of every single member. Isn’t that touching?
Enough Room For The Whole Family
As you can see, this is a couple that knows the importance of family. They managed to turn a rundown place into the most perfect farmhouse we have ever seen. They got to personalize it as well!
The two of them did a great job at renovating the home. In the photo above, you can see the kids enjoying their gorgeous home and enjoying a lot of time together. The Christmas tree can also fit there!
Working At Home
It is unfortunate, but the truth is that we have all brought our work home with us once or twice. Jo and Chip do not worry about this since they made sure to add desks in nearly every single room in the house.
Although there are numerous options for working spaces all over the house, this does not mean that there is zero space left for some family bonding. Mind you, this is a functional and practical home.
Warming Up At The Fireplace
Even though Texas can get very warm during the summers, you should not forget how cold it can get during the winters. It is a good thing that Joanna and Chip had been thinking ahead.
They made sure to keep the fireplace that came with the farmhouse intact. They have even added charming additions around the structures. We are glad they did that because the fireplace is gorgeous!
The Perfect Garden
Apart from the awesome greenhouse, Joanna also decided to make a tiny garden as well. We do not doubt just how much this family loves the outdoors! It must be awesome to be their kid.
The garden was designed to incorporate the beauty of the surroundings. Not only that, but the fence that surrounds it is ideal for keeping animals away for the sake of the plants. It works on the kids as well!
The kitchen was designed in such a way that nearly every feature has already been installed. Of course, Chip and Joanna did not forget to ensure that the design flow is seamless in there. The sign says “super market”, which is kind of a quirky touch!
The kitchen looks both pleasant and functional, which is an excellent combination. It would seem like there is nothing left. Let us not forget to appreciate just how spotless and clean the area happens to be.
A Place For Everything
Chip and Joanna have worked hard to ensure that everything looks perfect and in place. This is the reason the house looks very well-organized. We are sure they love coming home to the small farmhouse! If we were in their shoes, we would too.
This teaches the kids just how important it is to stay clean and organized. It is always a great idea to provide enough space for everyone to store their things.
Enough Play Space
Several kids have suggested that it is important to have a big play area. We are glad to hear that Chip and Joanna knew how to handle such a request!
The boys spent quite some time building houses of cards on the staircase. The photo here shows that the couple encourages their antics during playtime. There is more than enough space for their kids.
As you can see, Chip and Jo planned out the entire house with a lot of care. They also maximized whatever space they have in the house. For one thing, this little space was turned into a reading nook.
They added a couple of pillows to the area and converted the pillow into the best reading area for either parents and kids! Every member of the family seems to be happy and comfortable in their new home.
Before And After The Renovation
When you look at the photos of the farmhouse before the renovation, you would be unable to believe that this is the same place. Chip and Joanna clearly worked hard on its renovation.
They had a vision for the old farmhouse when they embarked on this project. We are sure that they were also aware that everyone had their eyes on them. The home probably required a lot of time, work, and dedication to turn it into the place it now is. However, we cannot deny that their efforts have paid off. It definitely managed to achieve dream house status.
The Gaines family now has enough space in their rather small farmhouse. This would not be the case if it weren’t for the awesome design. What used to be an old farmhouse is now the home of their dreams!
The way they designed the house is simply awesome. They took care to ensure that it flows well no matter where you are in the house. When you look at the result, you will see how talented Chip and Joanna are.
The Possibility Of Selling
The entire Gaines family seems to be expanding, so it is not out of the question to wonder if they plan on selling the property someday.
If you ask them, they will tell you that they are perfectly fine with their current situation. It is not in their plans to sell the house since they want the kids to grow up there! The children adore the farmhouse as much as they do. However, we have no idea what lies in store for any of them. We wish them the best of luck!
