Many names, such as Thomas Magnum, Police Chief Jesse Stone, Richard Burke, and Commissioner Frank Reagan from the NYPD, are famous for Tom Selleck. And that legendary mustache is not to be forgotten. Since Tom Selleck is one of Hollywood’s most famous actors, there’s a lot that we don’t know. Let ‘s address his successes, his past loves, and jobs, but also the shortcomings this actor has.  Tom Selleck got married for the second time with Jillie Mack in 1987. And since then, the pair have been together! We don’t know much about the Hollywood legend of 73 years old. Here’s what we dug up on Tom Selleck from his work to his love life to his ranch. 

Dreamer

From Detroit, Tom Selleck and his family moved to California. His mother was a housewife, and his dad was a real estate investor. During his youth, he learned from them a strong work ethic, which has remained with him throughout these years, which is something that he passed on to his daughter. Referring to the recent death of his mother in 2017, Selleck explained, “She’s always been there and always been realistic — even when she said, ‘ Wait until your father gets home, ‘ which was generally for a good reason.” 

Not The NBA

Selleck earned a University of Southern California basketball scholarship, but he had a side job as a model to pay the bills. Then, he was pursuing a Business Administration degree when his drama coach inspired him to try acting. Wow, that was good advice! And Selleck listened to him as he started studying at the Beverly Hills Playhouse with the brilliant Milton Katselas.

My Country

That’s amazing now! He served in the US Army between 1967 and 1973, is he not a real dark horse? Throughout his career, he was in the California Army National Guard’s 160th infantry regiment. “I am a soldier, I’m proud of that,” Selleck said earlier. “I was a U.S. Army Infantry Sergeant, Vietnam era National Guard. All of us, in that sense, are brothers and sisters.” 

Influence

When he was 70, Selleck said it was a decisive moment because it was the first time he had ever spoken about it after his dad passed away in 2011, he truly felt like a grown man. “I had a lot of leadership posts; I was in the military … but you know, in my situation, as my father died, I went, ‘ There’s no one to go for fatherly advice. You are on your own, pal, ‘” Selleck said. 

Only The Start

Selleck was, as you know, working as a model, but he was pushed to audition for The Dating Game by his Drama Coach and college friends. Sometimes it just takes a piece of advice to be a sensation, and for Tom Selleck, it was all that it needed. Pepsi called him to a star in their advertising film due to his time at the 60 ‘s show. He was almost an instantaneous star. Hang on, for this story; it is only the beginning.

Opportunity

After all the publicity that he generated, Twentieth Century Fox wanted to sign Selleck, and their talent department was adamant about him not signing any other series. And Selleck, well, he was no fool either, immediately grabbed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and appeared the very next day at the training class a brilliant move! 

Soap Opera Kid

He took a minor role as Jed Andrews on the hit soap opera The Young and the Restless. Maybe his role followed him to the real world because all the love triangles he played in the show seemed to mimic him in real life. That’s earnest anticipation! 

Beginnings

He took his most prominent lead role as Thomas Magnum in Magnum at the age of 35. This was a long-time coming job. He finally landed his big break after years of odd jobs in Hollywood. He traveled to Hawaii for the role, but due to a writer’s strike, the shoot was postponed for six months! And what do you know? During this time, he was working as a handyman just to earn money. Selleck is not squirmy about that; sometimes, you have to do what is necessary. 

Magnum P.I.

Magnum P.I. was undoubtedly a big show, as after 163 successful episodes, it went off the air. It’s eight seasons of Detroit cap from Magnum, Hawaiian t-shirts, red Ferrari, mustache, colt design, and caliber pistol. All the classic films that can be remembered in a heartbeat by every die-hard fan.

They See Me Rollin’

Thomas Magnum and his red Ferrari … This created a dilemma for producers as a tall guy, as they wanted Thomas to drive around in a Porsche, but his tall height made this extremely troublesome. Ergo, the classic Red Ferrari we all remember replaced the Porsche. Sales for Ferrari soared after Magnum was seen driving it around. 

Nothing But Respect

In 1996 Larry Manetti, Magnum ‘s co-star, wrote his autobiography, Aloha Magnum. In his autobiography, Hollywood’s most beloved star is expected to come out with scandalous dirt. But the contrary is true. He said nothing but amazing things about Selleck! Mainly when it came to Selleck’s work ethic during the filming, how he stood up for his fellow cast and crew, and his involvement with charities.

Star!

No wonder Tom Selleck has his Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was graced with honor in 1986, and it just goes to show how much his time on Magnum P.i—improved his career. 6925 Hollywood Blvd is the spot where you need to be to see it. 

One, Two

No one can, but Tom Selleck could play the lead in Magnum, P.I. But he almost didn’t play the part. The producers thought of somebody else, Kevin Dobson. Dobson was an established TV star, but in the end, he turned the role down. Selleck’s lucky break!

A Miss

Selleck was not allowed to work on any other project while filming Magnum P.I. And seeing how his success rose, that’s a tough thing to handle, especially when you land Indiana Jones’ leading role in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Sadly, Selleck had to turn the part down, because it interfered with his Magnum schedule. But get this, he could have gotten the Steven Spielberg / George Lucas blockbuster hit since the filming for Magnum P.I. It had been delayed. What a bad break. 

Swing And A Miss

It turns out that Selleck was asked to play in Victor / Victoria, a 1982 film, opposite Julie Andrews. When Selleck was apprehensive about assuming the role, it was too late when he decided he wanted it. His Magnum contract, the same one that cost him the part of Indiana Jones, was already locked in. 

Creative Team

Because of his relationship with the creative team, Selleck shared some concerns about how he first presented his character. He spoke to the creative without any hesitation and luckily had his role changed into an ordinary and approachable guy instead of a charming James Bondish look. This was the perfect chance for the plot, who knows if it would have worked without the request of Selleck? 

First Wife

After a year of dating, Tom Selleck and former model Jacqueline Ray married, but after 11 years of marriage, they filed for a divorce. He has an adopted son, Kevin, with whom even after the divorce, he keeps in contact with. Not many men will be continuing to have such a relationship, but not many men are like Tom Selleck. This is quite remarkable.

A Superstar of It’s Own

You remember his signature mustache, without a doubt? This is a rhetorical question. He is known throughout the world, and the beard deserves a museum exhibition of its own. Love Story

The second time it looks like it was a charm! A year before Magnum P.I. Aired its final season, Selleck and Jillie Mack got married, and they have been together ever since. Together they have a daughter named Hannah, and in California, the family lives. 

Small Role

It was pretty amazing that Seller was able to pull some strings for his wife and parents to appear on Magnum P.I even though they were just some roles. Jillie Mack starred in the Rembrandt ‘s Girl episode in the fourth season. 

The Right

When celebrities speak little about the political parties in which they are associated, it may be challenging to know where they stand. But he did not hesitate to make his political affiliations clear, Selleck was unusual in his approach. He publicly declared his support for John McCain as a Republican. He is also a member and board of directors of the National Rifle Association. 

Neither Here Nor There

Although he was actively involved in politics, in the 2016 presidential election, Selleck did not support both candidates. Whether he chose Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump has yet to be known. Then, Selleck decided to write a letter to David Brown, former chief of the Dallas Police Department. For what? He wanted to express how much he admired the courtesy and leadership Brown had shown during the police shooting in Dallas in 2016. What a terrific guy.

Baywatch

There’s a useful tidbit here now. In the 90s TV show Baywatch, Selleck was offered the role of Mitch Buchannon, but he turned it down. David Hasselhoff was played the role, as you know. Yet why did Selleck turned this down? Do you know? Because he didn’t wish to be remembered as a symbol of sex! Fair enough, I presume.

Dr. Richard Burke

This is an incredible fact, maybe my favorite one too. He starred as Dr. Richard Burke, a divorced ophthalmologist who dates Monica Geller, played by Courtney Cox, in one of the most-watched shows, Friends. Besides, he has also been nominated in a comedy series for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor. He is such a talented star, Phew!

Frank Reagan

Recently, he’s played Frank Reagan, a police commissioner on Blue Bloods TV series. Furthermore, in the real world, he gets saluted like it is by actual officers? Yeah, because they’re supposed to greet when they see a police commissioner. Quite respectful, aren’t they? 

Dad Jokes

His co-star Donnie Whalberg spoke of Frank Reagan openly about his mood. I think it felt like Christmas when my dad started telling jokes on Tuesday night in August, and it’s the same with Tom when he begins with his oddball jokes and the strange rhymes he said from 1930 that they’re so funny. Everybody feels so much lighter and happier. It is beautiful. “He may be (happy), yes, he usually makes sure everybody gets a sense of what’s important!”

An Affair To Remember

Selleck had been a real heartbreaker before his marriage to Jillian. Former model Marie Helvin was very attracted to him that in her autobiography, she even mentioned their steam. She said this about their fling, “When I visited Hawaii once, Tom Selleck was shooting for Magnum PI. We met, and a bit of an affair began, then Selleck came to London, we had dinner, and we went back to his hotel. But I sent him a letter the next morning to end this relationship because I was concerned about my married life. A week later, he joined the backstage of Musical Cats and met his wife. 

Tom and Mimi

Before she married the legendary Tom Cruise in 1990, Tom and Mimi Rogers were a hot pair.  Following his scandalous affair with Marie Helvin, Selleck dated Mimi so you can only imagine how the media portrayed their relationship. It was quite an exciting year for them both.

While promoting his 1999 film The Love Letter, Selleck appeared on Rosie O Donnell ‘s show. Instead of focusing on the movie, O’Donnell continually questioned him about gun ownership, to which he finally replied fearlessly, “This is your show, and after I leave, you can talk about it.”

Tom Selleck starred in the film Killers in 2010, alongside Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. While casting, Kutcher knew he wanted Mr. Kornfeldt to play an intimidating character. “In the script, I call Mr. Kornfeldt ‘ Sir ‘ a lot,” Kutcher explained, “he said.” And I thought, ‘ Who am I going to call Sir? ‘ Who’s a bigger guy, who’s got an intimidating feature, but doesn’t have to try to be daunting? “Yup, Tom Selleck, the one and only. 

A Break

A break is essential for us all, don’t we? Selleck was so lost in Magnum ‘s work, that he could hardly find time for his family and daughter. He was exhausted by work-life and needed a break. He felt that personal life is more important than his acting work. You have to respect his commitment to his family; not many would take a break from one of the most important roles of their lives.

“I found it very difficult to reveal my private life and to live with it,” Selleck explained during an interview. “It is important to nurture your marriage. I think it was good to want time away from work,” continued Selleck. Isn’t he simply the best man and husband? 

Reasons Reasons

Tom Selleck recently sat down for a Closer Weekly interview. He also revealed his willingness during this session to leave Magnum P.I.: “Magnum, P.I., went to 163 shows and we still have space to cover them, and I haven’t been sick of them. I’m tired of them because I’m in every shot.” His job in Blue Bloods right now is perfect because he is not expected to work every day since he is not in every shot. 

Not The Only Reason

Nonetheless, that was not his sole reason to quit the show. “I wanted to have a family. That’s why I left Magnum,” said Selleck. “It took a long time to get off the road, but I’m trying very hard to strike a balance.” For his family, he was willing to make great sacrifices, and since then, he has never looked back. 

Words of Wisdom

Selleck has been married twice, as we mentioned, but the second wife is a keeper. She is his greatest love, after all. Jillie Mack has won the heart of the star for some 30 years now. The actor recently opened up about what he believes to be the key to a successful marriage, “I think it’s been nice to take time away from work… It is important to nurture your marriage.” 

I Do

Tom Selleck and Jill Mack shocked fans and reporters in 1987 when they tied the knot secretly. In the 24-hour wedding chapel in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Bob, Selleck ‘s brother, arranged their secret wedding. Nevertheless, they used the names “Tom Jenkins” and “Suzie Mark” when they said, “I Do.” Just minutes before the ceremony began, the minister had recognized their true identities! 

Nervous

The wedding officer Rev. David Immel, revealed that they were both anxious, just like any other couple about to get married. “He was anxious about the service being compassionate and very concerned about the service is meaningful for her. He’s an incredibly warm, loving man!” Now that just seems perfect!

My Daughter, Hannah

Tom Selleck is like any other father when it comes to his daughter, Hannah-insanely proud and overflowing with buckets of affection for his daughter, Hannah. Her parents purposely kept her out of the spotlight during his youth, because they thought it was the best thing for her. We can comprehend where they come from. Growing their family on a ranch of 65 acres was just the right thing to do. Jillie Mack said, “We both thought that was the best place for Hannah to grow up.” Her parents certainly know best, and they have made the right call, seeing how she grew up! 

Farm Life

Hannah’s love for horses is what made her become an equestrian! “In California, I have a small breeding program where I am cultivating young horses to bring along and sell. This hobby has changed her life. It’s a business that has been a great experience so far. It’s a costly activity, so my father encouraged and invested in this breeding. They were very supportive. Horses ‘ prices are now high. And it’s so much more fulfilling to have a horse by yourself.” 

How Far?

The Selleck family owns and operates on a 60-acre avocado farm, which means that they always need to make sure that it runs smoothly. But how far would the family and Tom himself go to ensure that they stay that way? California suffered severe drought a few years ago, and during that time, Tom Selleck broke the law. He hired a truck to move approximately $1.4 million worth of water from the hydrant of a nearby town so his farm would continue to run. But this crime did not take long to catch up with him. 

On The Other Side

Selleck was subsequently sued in 2015. The Municipal Water District of Calleguas made allegations of illegally bringing water to the avocado farm. During a private investigation, they discovered that Selleck ‘s farm was using a tanker truck from a neighboring district after it filled up from a fire hydrant. District officials say that in two years, Selleck received water from the hydrant about 12 times. Also, they had previously sued him for simply ignoring a cease order. 

Settlement

The Water District Agency hired a private researcher for $22,000 to report the wrongdoing to the farm. But then a settlement agreement was reached, making him pay $21,000, which was enough to cover the costs of the investigation. 

Stepson Woes

Kevin, Tom’s stepson, has always been very close to Hollywood star since his first marriage. Since Kevin was a teenager, the pair had a strong bond. Sadly, Kevin suffered from several problems, such as failed music careers and financial distresses, which followed him to adulthood. All of this has “hardened” his attitude and damaged Selleck ‘s relationship too. 

Coffee Time

Selleck made sure he ‘d become more self – conscious about socializing with other women when he married Jillie. And Jillie was slightly nervous when Italian bombshell actress Sophia Loren became their neighbor. “If I was on my way to Home Depot and she was out in her bathrobe on the driveway, and she said these words exactly: ‘ Thomaso, would you like a cappuccino? ‘ I might just go in, ‘ he said. We are positive Selleck has come a long way since his Playboy days. 

Ethics

While Selleck has a fair share of controversies, he has a strict ethical code that he follows. “I try very hard to be ethical because that is important now to my stability,” he explained. “We are a society that’s so individual-centered. The culture says that nothing is more important than the way you feel.” 

Raspberry Kiss

Selleck appeared on the late-night The Chevy Chase Show on Fox as a guest-star in 1993. For a skit, he asked to be awarded the 1992 Worst Supporting Actor Razzie Award for his role in Christopher Columbus: The Discovery as King Ferdinand of Spain. When met on air with the Razzie, Selleck also shed light on the whole situation and asked the audience in the studio to “throw me a raspberry.” 

Heart of Gold

As Magnum P.I.’s 8th and final season, Tom Selleck was awarded a $350,000 bonus by the Universal Studios that he was going to spend on extravagant gifts such as Rolex watches and Porsches. However, the most remarkable thing is that he gave a bonus of $1,000 to the whole cast and crew of Magnum, P.I. He indeed has a heart of gold.

Good Reason

Somebody asked Selleck in an interview back in 1980 about rejecting a cameo role in Magnum P.I’s film adaptation,  to which he replied bluntly. “What scares me – because I love “Magnum” and we have loyal fans— they ‘re taking those TV show names, buying them and spending $100 million on special effects, and then they’re making fun of them and underplay them. Later they would try to get the guy who used to be there to do some stupid cameo to prove to the viewer that it’s OK. And I’m not going to do that.” 

Spike!

More than an accomplished actor, Tom Selleck is an indoor volleyball and beach volleyball player! He plays for the Outrigger Canoe Club in Honolulu as the outside hitter position. One teammate once said, “Tom was a great teammate who loved being included with such an experienced and talented community and who was doing and playing hard when his Magnum schedule allows it…He was very cooperative with us all, and we appreciated the big crowds that replaced the normal small number of players ‘ friends and spouses at the national tournament matches.” 

Say It Ain’t So

The unthinkable happened in 1997… Tom Selleck shaved off his mustache! NOOOOOOOOO! All right, I’m comfortable again. Nevertheless, he did so for the In & Out movie. He didn’t shave it again later unless it was required for a job. 

Broadway

Selleck took the lead in the Broadway revival of A Thousand Clowns back in 2001. People were quick to bash the performance of Selleck because they thought Jason Robards, Jr. was playing the part much better; I mean, he won loads of awards to portray the character. Gardner, the playwright, was quick to say, “Selleck was the way Murray had always seen him.”    

Outdoorsman

Not surprisingly, Selleck is quite the keen outdoorsman, marksman, and collects firearm. Everything made him ready to play in Western movies! And he did star in westerns movies like The Sacketts, The Shadow Riders, and Quigley Down Under and Crossfire Trail, among others.

Honor

To hear that Tom Selleck was invited back in 2015 into the International Mustache Hall of Fame is not so far fetched. Yes, we are serious. Quite sore. Selleck has, of course, been added to the Film and Television category.

Would you believe Selleck even skipped the iconic role of Indiana Jones AND as the title role of the hit movie The Terminator in 1984?! Crazy. Yes, because of his Magnum, P.I., he missed out on both. Yikes!

Quite surprisingly, Selleck is a significant philanthropist. Awesome! He currently serves as a board member for The Joseph & Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics. A member of the Advisory Board of the Character Coalition, as a national fatherhood initiative spokesperson, a John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts board member, and is active in New York City with the Student / Sponsor Partnership Program. He loves to give back so that this list might be longer. 

Female Sequel Series

Eva Longoria is the executive producer for the production of Magnum P. I’s all-female spin-offs! Magnum ‘s daughter, Lily, will follow the series as she takes over her father’s Hawaiian business. We can’t wait to learn more! 

A Spin

The legendary Ferrari 308 that Selleck drove during his Magnum PI days was recently up for sale at an Arizona auction. The price you asked? A really cool $250,000. Moreover, it even had an authentication certificate to prove that Selleck really used to drive it. It was sold for only 181,500 dollars.  

Friends

Dr. Richard Burke is an outstanding off-screen guy Why? For what? Because on Friends he ranks third-biggest guest character. That is not shocking to us! The first two are Brad Pitt and Paul Rudd. Not surprising, though.

Changes

Jesse Stone, a transplanted lawyer, has been playing the role since 2005. This role is from a series based on Robert B. Parker ‘s novels inspired by a TV-made film. There are currently nine films and Selleck himself recently started producing episodes. Film five: Jesse Stone: Thin Ice was actually the original story created by Selleck, not a new adaptation!

Commercials

Selleck has been asked to be a star in many advertisements all through his long career. When you’re liked as well as he is, chances are that sales will grow exponentially. He has appeared on the screen so far for Right Guard, AT&T, Natural Orange Juice in Florida, and American Advisors Group (AAG).

Tom Selleck joined the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in February 2009 when he became the national spokesperson for the new National Mall Education Center that was built there. The Memorial Fund was dedicated to Vietnam Veterans.

I Like It

Selleck was invited to talk in an interview in 2002 about his work. He has shown that he loves his Blue Bloods character and the whole Reagan family are practicing Catholics, though he himself is not very religious.

He seemed to be understandably sad after Tom Selleck was divorced. At that time, his crewmembers were in London shooting, so he decided to see the musical’ Cats.’ But Selleck returned more than a dozen times after the first performance! But, why did the actor from Hollywood keep going back?

Well, because he had been struck by Rumpleteazer, he kept going back. Oh and Jillie Joan Mack, 25 years old, played Rumpleteazer! Selleck introduced himself and finally made arrangements for dinner. After the “Cats” contract of Mack ended, she was able to see Selleck a lot of time and that’s what they did exactly.

These couples were husband and wife for more than 30 years now. “Jillie and I have an incredibly strong partnership,” Selleck told NY Daily News and said. “If one of us makes a decision concerning Hannah, then the other parent fully supports that stance, even if you disagree.” We are not doing anything or making decisions without consulting each other.
