Vertical Forests – The New Weapon Against Global Warming

Stefano Boeri, who is an Italian architect, had a groundbreaking epiphany when he decided to work on an innovative idea – “vertical forests”. It sounds like something straight out of science fiction movies, but the reality is that it all but sci-fi. While there are some who deny that global warming is an issue at all, there are others that are taking extreme measures to battle it. This specific architect has been looking at nature for a way to fight what’s killing it. The answer he found is vertical forests.

Vertical Forests

The idea seems simple enough to Boeri. He claims that by involving nature with architecture, we’ll be able to create living spaces that are friendly to both environments. This would be especially relevant and helpful for those living in urban areas.

Nanjing Towers

Stefano’s first stop was Nanjing, China. The decision to start there came from the fact that the extreme air pollution there is a well-known problem. The “Nanjing Towers” will hold the title of becoming the fist ever vertical forests in Asia. Ideally he would like his team to grow more than 1,000 trees and over 2,500 shrubs which would in turn generate a massive 132 pounds/60kg of oxygen on a daily basis.

Beyond China

If you thought this innovator was stopping in Asia, then you have another thing coming. China was just a stepping stone to other locations where he aims to boost his idea of vertical forests. Other sites he has his eye on, includes, Milan and Switzerland, and who knows where he’ll be headed from there. The Milan version of his project is called, “Bosco Verticale.”

To Infinity And Beyond?

It seems that Stefano is not afraid of pushing the boundaries, even if those boundaries are created by atmospheric pressure. Earth is only the start for what he has planned for a cleaner future. Mars. That’s right. By the year 2117, Stefano and his team aim to establish vertical forests that can be created and set on Mars. The main reason being that he believes climate change would have taken its toll by then.
