They attempted to lift the gravestone at first, but quickly realized that it was too heavy to do so while the dog was still sitting on it. Nevertheless, as they worked the stone by pulling and tugging on it, one of the cops became aware of something that the others had missed. He stopped tugging all of a sudden and began digging in the dirt adjacent to the grave.

Gabby watched the officers dig next to the grave as they continued their investigation. Even though the rain had stopped falling in torrents by this time, the ground remained moist and muddy. Every hole that the cops excavated almost immediately became filled with water. Gabby was able to observe, as the hole filled with water on its own, the increasing levels of anxiety on the faces of the law enforcement agents.
