Viking Tower: Newport, Rhode Island

In the midst of Newport, Rhode Island stands this teeny-tiny structure that is commonly referred to as the Mystery Viking Tower. This is an interesting landmark, but given that no one knows anything about it, it may be too interesting for its own good. For centuries, individuals have speculated who constructed this edifice and why they did so. Yet, folklore has it that Vikings were responsible for the construction of the edifice, which would make it one of the oldest structures in the country. Those who believe it have a plausible explanation for what happened, despite the fact that there is no evidence to support it. But, it doesn’t take long for the speculation to become tiresome. Even a little bit of intrigue can be entertaining, but this structure has just too much of it.

South Of The Border: Hamer, South Carolina

One of the most overrated tourist destinations on this list is South of the Border, and it can be found just on the other side of the state line that divides North Carolina and South Carolina. The gas station, which has a café and a gift shop attached to it, serves as a marker for people who are entering or exiting the state of South Carolina. There is nothing particularly noteworthy about the tourist restaurant that is designed to be kitschy or the gift shop that is larger than usual. There is no compelling reason to make a detour and spend time at South of the Border unless you have a yearning for the food that is served at the restaurant or you need to fill up your gas tank. If either of these are the case, you should stop there.
