Times Square: New York, New York

Travel books almost universally advise first-time visitors to New York City to go to the city proper and spend some time around Times Square. But, any real New Yorker would tell you to steer clear of Manhattan’s Times Square at all costs; you should take their advice and do the same. Times Square, which is located in the middle of Manhattan, is quite congested and is filled with pricey souvenir shops and restaurant chains that are not specific to this area. Also, the region is home to enormous retail establishments as well as people who go to great lengths to dress up in absurd costumes for photo opportunities. Times Square is not the place to go if you are someone who dislikes being among large groups of people, in particular.

Corn Palace: Mitchell, South Dakota

The stunning national parks and other natural wonders of South Dakota have helped earn the state its reputation. South Dakota is home to a number of popular tourist destinations, including Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore, and Custer State Park, amongst others. In spite of the fact that these are popular, and for good reason, another tourist attraction, the Corn Palace, is grossly exaggerated in its importance. The Corn Palace is a structure that has paintings made from maize and other grains all over its exterior. In addition to serving as a venue for concerts and sporting events, it can accommodate other types of gatherings as well. The bottom line is that it is not worth going out of your way to visit this location if you are not going to be attending a performance or game that is being held there.
