Scientists have discovered that not everything found in the ice is dead. This was also the situation with the next find. These discoveries aren’t often the product of frozen disasters, but rather of natural changes in the environment. Alligators, for example, can survive in subzero temperatures for a period of time. On the other hand, you and I will almost certainly succumb to frostbite. They can survive these erratic temperatures thanks to this frozen state of brief hibernation. If only we were capable of doing the same.

It’s also not uncommon to come across smashed technology on ice. Even when it does occur, it still comes as a complete shock. This jet was supposed to be flying to Anchorage, Alaska in 1952, but it crashed on a glacier instead! It resulted in the deaths of 11 crew members and 41 passengers, according to reports. Rescuers and police personnel were also unable to remove the wreckage due to the hazardous conditions. After the glacier melted enough for a recovery mission to be launched, it took another 50 years.
