Even before he walked into the room, Eric recognized what had taken place. The police and doctors were only able to piece together that Conor had bolted out of a window that had been briefly left open for cleaning, and that he had dropped to the earth below after bolting out of the window. Eric was in a trance and found himself in the position of having to look after other people while he was bewildered.

They travelled to London with the casket after determining who had died at a morgue and burying him there. Meanwhile, the Italians cried in the background as the funeral was taking place. In a stupor and a state of shock for the remainder of the night, Clapton remained on the floor. This occurred a few days before his 46th birthday, on a frigid and dreary day in the heart of winter, just before his birthday. He was in complete disarray.
