Sophia Lamar

Sophia Lamar, born Enrique Muoz on June 6, 1955, first earned a reputation for herself in the Cuban underground scene before coming to the United States in 1980. She moved to New York after a brief spell in San Francisco, where she not only entertained but also obtained roles in the LGBTQ+ film scene. Candy Apple, The Zanctuary, and Adam Green’s Aladdin are among her credits as an actress and producer. Sophia Lamar has been the face of Levi’s, Trash & Vaudeville, and the NYU School of Medicine Center for AIDS Research, in addition to her work as an entertainer. Being a trans woman who has achieved celebrity status, she is an inspiration to both the trans community and trans youth.

Sylvia Rivera

Sylvia Rivera has been dubbed the transgender movement’s Rosa Parks. She spearheaded community groups in New York City as a transgender rights activist, including the Gay Liberation Front. Marsha P. Johnson, a close friend and confidante, and she co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, or STAR. The two women were committed to assisting drag queens who were struggling, whether it was with their gender identity or simply surviving. Rivera attempted to educate her readers on the terminology transvestite and other LGBTQ+ categories in her article Your Half Sisters and Half Brothers of the Revolution. She was a wonderful humanitarian who spent her time at the Metropolitan Community Church assisting and feeding those in need.
