Unlimited Possibilities
Dolly’s maternal uncle Bill Owens was the first to encourage her to take her songwriting seriously as a profession. Dolly remembered the time he drove them in his old car to Louisiana so they could record a song they co-wrote called “Puppy Love” for a local radio station. Dolly recalled a time when he had to sleep in his car, but he now believes it was well worth it.
Shock of a Lifetime
Dolly felt the same excitement as any other musician hearing their debut single play on the radio. She was only 12 years old when “Puppy Love” was released, and she was overjoyed to hear her voice on the radio for the first time. Speaking to The Guardian, she said, “The radio was across the room and I almost killed myself, slipping in the mop water, trying to turn the volume up.”
