Advice from Mom
Dolly told CMT, “My mother made me a little white dress and a little bouquet. But I refused to get married in a registry office, saying, “I’ll never feel married in a registry office.” So we went to the little Baptist church in town and asked Pastor Don Duvall, ‘Would you marry us?'” she continued. Outside the church, we posed for photos on the steps. Neither was marriage what she had expected, but neither was this.
A Rising Star
Dolly’s husband’s feelings toward her career in country music became an issue as her fame grew. Carl Dean and Dolly attended their first red carpet event together soon after their wedding. As the story goes, he dressed for the engagement but told her on the way home, “Dolly, I want you to have everything you want, and I’m happy for you, but don’t you ever ask me to go to another one of those dang things again!”
