A one-room cabin was home to Parton and her family. Dolly has been forthright about the challenges they faced, such as having to accommodate 14 people in a house without electricity or running water. Music and religion were often the only things that could lift the family’s spirits when they were crushed under the weight of poverty. Dolly, like many other country stars, found her voice in the church, but it would be difficult for her to leave the rural South behind.

Dolly’s father passed away in 2000, and in 2015 she wrote a song about him to honor his memory and the impact he had on her life. She went on to say that despite the fact that her family was poor and her father had nearly broken his back working to support them, the kids were always thankful. They could see how hard he was working, and she claimed they would compete for the chance to scrub his feet with corn silk lotion.
