HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones is well-known for the way it seamlessly integrates violence and drama in a complicated storyline, as well as blindsiding everyone by killing off their favorite character at the most unpredictable time. However, there are still some very noteworthy love stories in this chaotic medieval fiction. We’ve put together a list of your favorite GOT stars and their real-life partners. Just a heads up, some pairs are actually pretty surprising.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
Sophie Turner plays Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones and this character seems to have the worst luck in men. She was first engaged to the devilish and incestuous Joffrey Baratheon, an illegitimate king who made her suffer every day and who took her captive in his kingdom. After that, she ends up with Ramsay Bolton, also an illegitimate and psychopathic Warden of the North. Good thing Sophie Turner didn’t choose any of the two. Her real-life dating history is more colorful than her on-screen one. She is actually happily married to Joe Jonas of the band, Jonas Brothers. Their love story is actually pretty cute. Joe was the one who smoothly DMed her on Instagram, and the rest, as they say, was history.
Sean Bean and Ashley Moore
Sean Bean only stayed on the show as Lord Eddard Stark for one season, but his character’s spirit continued to live on through his nephew, Jon Snow. In the most recent season’s iconic scene, Stark was even mentioned. Bean’s character on the show is famous for being the happily married husband of Catelyn Stark. But in real life, Bean is now married to Ashley Moore, his fifth wife. They got married in 2015. The two instantly hit it off when they met by chance at Bean’s favorite North London pub. Moore is a former actress who is 26 years younger than Bean.
Hafthor Julius Bjornsson and Kelsey Henson
Ser Gregor Clegane, who is also well-known as The Mountain, isn’t associated with love in the famous show. He’s more into plundering, killing, and destroying things. He was already a monster before Cersei Lannister made him into a Frankenstein, Westerosi version. The star behind this character is Icelandic actor and strongman Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who earned the title as the world’s strongest man. He towers above everyone at 6’9”. Björnsson is currently dating Kelsey Henson, a Canadian Instagram influencer who is 5’2” tall. If you don’t know their height, you’d think that he was twice her size! The two first met at the restaurant where Henson worked as a server and where she asked for his autograph.
Gwendoline Christie and Giles Deacon
Brienne of Tarth appears to be head over heels in love with Ser Jaime Lannister, the man who knighted her. It was a major twist in the plot where fans began suspecting that the two were falling for each other. This was despite the fact that they abhorred each other when Brienne was first given the task by Catelyn Stark to ensure the safety of the Kingslayer. However, Gwendoline Christie’s choice of a boyfriend in real life is far different from Ser Jaime – Giles Deacon, a fashion designer. Their relationship began in 2012 and both are each other’s biggest supporters. Giles has previously said that Christie is his muse, and Christie has mentioned that her boyfriend is her favorite designer. Truly, it is a match made in heaven!
Pilou Asbæk and Anna Bro
Pilou Asbæk once played a spin doctor in the political drama Borgen in Denmark. He was thrust into fame internationally when he took the role of Euron Greyjoy, a seedy character in Game of Thrones. Euron Greyjoy kills his brother in the series and pulls all the shots to romance Cersei Lannister, the evil queen. Euron flirting with Cersei is definitely cringe-worthy because of Pilou’s excellent portrayal of the role. However, he is actually a happily married man to playwright Dane Anna Bro. It’s good to know that he and Cersei aren’t really a couple in real life.
Jason Momoa And Lisa Bonet
Jason Momoa played the famous role of Khal Drogo, the Dothraki leader in Game of Thrones. Despite the fact that he only lasted for the first season in the series, his influence on the Daenerys Targaryen, the main character, is incomparable. To be such an influence on the mother of the dragons, the breaker of chains, the unburnt, and so on, is not an easy feat. On the contrary, his real-life character is actually hopeless romantic which is the exact opposite of his primitive character on the show. He saw his future wife Lisa Bonet on TV when he was just 8 years old. He promised himself to stalk her “for the rest of his life” until he finally got her.
Alfie Allen and DJ Allie Teilz
Not many people know this, but Alfie Allen, the actor who plays Theon Greyjoy on Game of Thrones, is actually the English singer Lily Allen’s brother. Now that we’ve talked about it, let’s move on to his dating life as he hasn’t really had one in the famous show since he was caught by the Boltons. Alfie is actually dating the American DJ Allie Teilborg who is more famous for her stage name “Allie Teilz.” She is eight years younger than Alfie. In 2018, the couple had their first child, following their whirlwind romance. They have also posted their photos on Instagram, effectively making their relationship public.
Emilia Clarke and Charlie McDowell
Queen Daenerys of House of Targaryen, queen of the Andals and the First Men, lady of the seven kingdoms and protector of the realm is quite a mouthful of a title for one woman, but rightly so. This impressive lady can have any man she wants, both in real life and on screen. She was actually dating someone until early this year. No, it’s not Kit Harrington. It’s actually a guy named Charlie McDowell. He is a movie director and writer, and also the son of actors Mary Steenburgen and Malcolm McDowell. The reason for their breakup is still unknown to the public, but we can’t really question her grace’s decision, can we?
Iain Glen and Charlotte Emmerson
Ser Jorah Mormont is one of the few characters that lasted in Game of Throne’s eight seasons. He has impressed fans by his steadfast loyalty to his queen whom he deeply loves. His feelings remain true even though she had made it clear that their relationship will only remain platonic. Iain Glen, the star who portrays the role of Mormont is married to Charlotte Emmerson, a British actress. One touching moment happened while they were filming the last episode of the show on set. His wife had a brain hemorrhage while he was filming “The Battle of Winterfell.” Emilia Clarke, the actress who plays Daenerys, Mormont’s object of desire, pressed him to go see his wife. He got on a plane and did just that, and she recovered.
Natalie Dormer and Anthony Byrne
Natalie Dormer or more famously known as Lady Margaery Tyrell ended her engagement to the director and writer Anthony Byrne in November 2018. They met each other when they work on The Tudors, and their romance soon started. The two admitted that part of the reason for their breakup is their inability to separate their romantic relationship from work. This relationship, however, is a relief compared to her character’s fate on the show. Lady Margaery Tyrell was engaged to King Joffrey Baratheon, a psychopathic character. She was later on killed by Cersei Lannister, his conniving mother. We don’t really know what went wrong in their relationship, but we’re sure that Byrne couldn’t have been as bad.
Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie
It’s now time to talk about the well-loved character Jon Snow or Aegon Targaryen. He is the bastard boy who advanced through the Night’s Watch’s ranks. He is also the person responsible for uniting of the northmen. He also becomes King in the North, and just recently, goes to battle riding a dragon. He falls in love with a real queen in his journey. In real life, he got married to a woman he met on the series earlier in the story, before his epic rise in the series. He married Rose Leslie, the actress who portrayed the charming but ferocious wildling Ygritte. The two got married in 2018 after falling in love on set.
Aidan Gillen and Camille O’Sullivan
Lord Petyr Baelish, also known as “Littlefinger,” is as seedy as they come. This schemer lurks in the shadow’s, trying to know everyone’s secrets, and uses what he learns against them to get closer to the Iron Throne. Not including the characteristics listed above, Aidan Gillen, who portrays Baelish in the show, is actually a mysterious man himself. He keeps to himself most of the time and his private life is pretty much under wraps, including his relationship with Camille O’ Sullivan, an Irish singer and actress. The actress has shared how despite the fact that it took her a while to let Gillen in, they eventually hit it off.
Iwan Rheon and Zoe Grisedale
Before you react to this one, take some time to separate the actor from the character he portrays. All the fans hate Ramsay Bolton and will concur that he doesn’t have the right to be with any woman – and of course, his death on Game of Thrones was very satisfying indeed. On the contrary, the man who portrays this villainous character is quite different in real life. Iwan Rheon is a Welsh actor who is also famous for portraying Simon Bellamy in Misfits. He has been dating the actress Zoe Grisedale for some years now. It seemed like the two met in Dinard, France, and Iwan, who happens to be a musician as well, used city’s name for his debut album!
Nikolaj and Nukaaka Coster-Waldau
Ser Jaime Lannister’s and his evil twin sister’s incestuous relationship on-screen sure make the audiences cringe. A lot of the most unfortunate events on the show wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for their twisted romance. However, in real life, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is actually married to Nukaaka Coster-Waldau, a Greenlandic singer who supports his career. Nikolaj and his wife, who is also a former Miss Greenland and an actress, have been together for more than 20 years and have settled in a little town near Copenhagen. In 2017, Nukaaka admitted that she had not seen a single episode of Game of Thrones yet.
Carice Van Houten and Guy Pearce
Lady Melisandre, one of the more mysterious characters on Game of Thrones, is often called the Red Woman because of her role as a Red Priestess in the religion called R’hllor, the Lord of Light. In the famous series, the only reason for Melisandre’s love life is to bring about what she thinks are religious prophesies. She only succeeds in romancing Stannis Baratheon, as she is turned down by Jon Snow. The two men are unaware that she is older than them by several centuries, which is revealed on season six’s first episode. Off-screen, the beautiful Dutch actress Carice Van Houten, who plays Melisandre on the show, is actually in a relationship with Australian actor Guy Pearce. According to her, he has forced her to practice her English.
Lena Headey and Dan Cadan
Lena Headey has portrayed the role of Cersei Lannister brilliantly that it might be hard for a fan of Game of Throne to see her having a life outside of the famous show. Like, who can imagine her doing something else than blow up the sept or mercilessly holding on to the iron throne? Apparently, Headey is indeed as occupied as her on-screen character in real life. She got married to the filmmaker Dan Cadan, who she has dated for a long time. The two have a long history, being childhood friends and Heady appearing in some of his short films. The two have a daughter together.
Kristofer Hivju and Gry Molvær Hivju
Tormund Giantsbane perfectly personifies a wildling in Game of Thrones. He is huge, with a long beard, wide eyes, plus a preference for telling stories that revolve around drinking a giant’s breast milk. Well, it’s pretty easy to tell that you do not want to mess with this guy. Although his character’s looks can be scary, Kristoff Hivju, the actor who portrays Giantsbane, is actually devoted to his family. He married Gry Molvær Hivju, his longtime girlfriend, in 2015. It has been known that he takes his wife and kids on sets, which he also did when he filmed Fast and Furious 8: Fate of the Furious. His wife’s opinion on Tormund’s obsession with Brienne is unknown to this day.
Richard Madden and a Heap of Famous Women
Richard Madden first rose to fame when he played Robb Stark in Game of Thrones. After 300 years, Stark was proclaimed the first King of the North. Prior to this, King Joffrey Baratheon executed his father, Ned. Just recently, Madden appeared in BBC’s extremely popular drama Bodyguard. This young actor may have gotten a taste for going out with popular women as he became famous. Madden’s has been with Jenna Coleman (an actress), Laura Whitmore (a television presenter), and Suki Waterhouse (a model). And of course, we mustn’t forget Ellie Bamber, an actress as well as a model. On the show, Stark and the Lannisters don’t mix very well, but it seems like Madden and Tyrion Lannister have something in common.
Peter Dinklage and Erica Schmidt
Erica Schmidt may not be as famous as her husband who is a Game of Thrones star, but she is doing pretty well herself in the industry as a playwright and theater director. The couple has their passion in the performing arts in common, but Dinklage obviously prefers to express his love for it in front of the camera. The two got married in 2005, which is a life contrary to Tyrion Lannister’s, Dinklage’s character on the famous show. His character’s marriage to Sansa Stark did not last long in the series and was far from being romantic. Tyrion also had a long record of dating around before his marriage. Although Tyrion fell in love with a woman named Shae once, it didn’t end well as she picked his father over him.
Stephen Dillane and Naomi Wirthner
Fans have last seen Stannis Baratheon on season five’s last episode, where his miniscule army was annihilated by the Ramsay Bolton’s forces outside of Winterfell. He had an affair with Melisandre, the Red Priestess despite the fact that he was married to Selyse Baratheon. People know Lord Stannis to be a conservative and a pretty straight-edge person but the man behind the character is actually very chill. He has been dating Naomi Wirthner, an actress and director, since 1988. The two have two kids, one of them is an actor as well who even appeared in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as the young Tom Riddle.
Jacob Anderson and Aisling Loftus
Jacob Anderson played the role of one of Khaleesi’s top lieutenants very well: fierce, guarded, and monotone – with a gentle side. Greyworm is a character who was born as a slave but has advanced in the military as a great leader. Along the way, he falls in love with the sophisticated Missandei. It seems like Anderson’s love life off-screen isn’t too shabby either although he appears to have a different preference in women in real life. He has been dating Aisling Loftus, the War and Peace actress. The two have kept the things in their relationship away from the public eye, but it’s clear that things are going well!
Michiel Huisman and Tara Elders
Daario Naharis caught the fans’ attention when he became Khaleesi’s first lover after her first husband Khal Drogo. Naharis used his charm, boldness, combat ability, and of course, his looks to win over the dragon queen. Although their affair didn’t last long, his ability to seduce Daenerys Targaryen was in itself amazing. There isn’t anything Ser Jorah Mormont wouldn’t do to have such kind of intimacy with the queen. The man who portrays Daario is Michiel Huisman, a successful actor and musician in Denmark. He is dating a fellow Dutch actress named Tara Elders.
Jonathan Pryce and Kate Fahy
Jonathan Pryce plays the role of the High Sparrow in Game of Thrones’s seasons 5 and 6, and this character receives so little love in the show. As a matter of fact, this religious leader is not allowed to have one. The Sparrow is more focused on accumulating power in King’s Landing and dictate everyone into following the Faith of the Seven according to his dogmatic interpretation. Contrary to his role, Pryce has a colorful love life. He is married to Kate Fahy, also an actress. The couple first met at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool while working on a project together. They fell in love with each other at the time despite the fact that they were both married to different individuals. They broke up with their respective spouses to be together.
Nathalie Emmanuel and Alex Lanipekun
Missandei is a slave girl in Meeren who becomes a trusted handmade of the dragon queen. She remains loyal to Queen Daenerys Targaryen and even stays at her side during the Long Night. In the story, she falls in love with one of Daenerys’ top lieutenants called Greyworm. The amazing actress who portrays Missandei on screen is Nathalie Emmanuel. She is dating Alex Lanipekun, a fellow actor. Lanipekun is a British actor who is popularly known for playing Ben Kaplan, a spy and journalist, in the BBC drama Spooks. Just make sure not to tell Greyworm about this or he’ll be mad with jealousy. But to be honest, who isn’t?
Rory McCann and…Just Himself
Sandor Clegane, also known as The Hound, is the brutish, rough, and huge character in Game of Thrones who enjoys one of the most wide-ranging developments on the show. He goes from Joffrey Baratheon’s guard dog to the protector of Arya Stark, to a warrior in the coalition that Jon Snow created to fight the army of the dead. However, this character has never had any romance in the series. Rory McCann, the Scottish actor who plays Clegane is similar to his character in many ways as he also lives a transient life alone. He said that he doesn’t usually date because he moves a lot for work. If he were to date someone, he said that he would like to do it with a “quiet woman” who enjoys cuddles. He has also expressed a preference for Icelandic women as “they wear the trousers.”
