After it had its fill of the sausages that Mallory offered, the fox went back to sleep and stayed asleep until they reached the shore. The noise alarmed it again and Mallory had to keep it calm. However, there was a lot of noise to terrify a wild animal. Mallory was hoping that talking to it would help in keeping it calm, at least long enough for them to finish docking.

She was sitting near fox’s makeshift bed and was talking to it, aware that the fox wouldn’t understand a word that she was saying. She was hoping that her tone was calm enough to convey what she meant. All she needed was for it to stay still until they dock the boat and they could disembark.
