When a child starts acting differently at school, it is up to the teacher to find out what’s going on, and that is exactly what this little boy’s kindergarten teacher did for him. What was going on to make him pull away from his friends and academics? Read on to find out what was going on and why his dad had to get involved.
One day at school, 4-year-old Camden did not seem like he was feeling well, so his teacher, Nancy, sat down with him to have a little chat to find out what was wrong. It was then that the young boy revealed to his teacher that seeing his father terrified him.
Loving And Caring
When the teacher heard this, she had no intention of turning a blind eye. Teaching is a noble profession. Teachers help mold the mind of a child and they can be someone whom the child trusts and depends on.
Noticed A Change
Nancy Bleur is a 54-year-old kindergarten teacher, who is loving and caring, and adores her students. She goes the extra mile to make sure that her students are well cared for and happy. The question is, how far would she go to help young Camden?
Listening To Connect
In the past few weeks, Camden had become anti-social, which was not like the little boy at all. Nancy felt something just wasn’t right. He didn’t play with other kids anymore and while in class, he seemed extremely distracted.
Getting In Touch
What made Nancy even more worried was the fact that Camden now spent most of his time alone. The teacher knew something was up, and she wondered what it was. Nancy could tell that there was something wrong with Camden, so she decided that she would help him, no matter what the problem was.
The teacher set out to connect with her young student, listening to what Camden had to say. After she spoke to him, she realized that he was having some trouble at home. Nancy knew that she needed to find out the truth about the situation.
Thought Long And Hard
When Nancy heard what Camden had to say, the teacher immediately thought that her first priority was to contact the little boy’s father to investigate further. She wanted to know more about the issues surrounding the boy’s unhappiness.
Strangers In Uniforms
Even though it a pretty difficult phone call to make, Nancy was able to find out the truth about Camden’s troubles. She got the phone number of Camden’s dad from the school records and called to ask him a question – something so unexpected that he had to ask her to repeat what she said.
Darreld, Camden’s dad, thought the worst as soon as he answered the call from his son’s teacher. He wondered whether his young son had gotten in trouble or if something happened at school. However, when Nancy told him why she called, he was completely blindsided.
Darreld did not expect Camden to tell anyone his secret, and now she was onto him. The teacher then asked Darreld a question. Nancy thought long and hard before calling Camden’s dad. She wondered if she was out of line but when she remembered Camden’s face, she knew that she needed to do it.
One Of The Hardest Decisions
To avoid offending Darreld, she thought carefully about the phrasing of her question. She really hoped that it was the right thing to do, and when she found out the answer, she knew that she had to act right away.
Setting Things In Motion
Nancy had never thought Camden’s problems at home included something like this. The young boy confided to her that in the past few weeks, strangers in uniforms had come to his home more than once.
Proof Of Being Ready
He was really worried about his dad being taken away again. However, what could the teacher do about it? Nancy had worried about interfering in her student’s life since she felt it wasn’t her place to do so.
A Serious Problem
However, she knew that she needed to do something, and fast. In all the years that she has been teaching, she has interacted with a lot of children and had seen other similar situations escalate before.
Going The Extra Mile
When Camden came to her and confessed, the little boy could barely keep it together and he didn’t understand what his family was experiencing. Miss Nancy meant a lot to young Camden. The young boy knew that if his teacher couldn’t help, no one could.
She promised she would do all she can to make things right – including making the ultimate sacrifice. However, she had to make a decision first. While Nancy had a hunch, she needed to be completely sure going forward.
The decision was among the hardest she has ever had to make. The teacher was set on giving Camden the life that he so deserved. However, no one could ever have guessed she would take things this far – Camden’s father, least of all.
Once school was out, Nancy went to the nearest hospital to fill in the required paperwork. After that, she made an appointment to have psychological counseling. Being sure of her mental state was one of the things required to go forward.
She knew that she was going to embark on something that wasn’t easy. Nancy had a string of tests done. When she finally got the results, they indicated that she was ready both physically and mentally for what she had to do and could handle what was to come.
The tests proved she was willing to help Camden and that she could do it. Camden’s dad, Darreld Petersen, was actually not doing really well health-wise and his future looked quite bleak. His kidneys were only functioning at 20% of their capacity.
He looked so sick during his dialysis treatment that the reality of it distraught 4-year-old Camden. Then, Nancy made up her mind to do something really amazing. Here is where the story starts to get interesting.
It is natural for Nancy to feel really bad for Darreld and to be worried about how this would affect Camden. You would think that she would offer to look after Camden when Darreld couldn’t, but she went far beyond that type of menial support.
She wanted to help solve the family’s problems. After asking Darreld the really important question, Nancy decided she would make an extraordinary offer and help the family. She filled in all the paperwork and underwent all the necessary tests.
Fortunately for Darreld, Nancy turned out to be a perfect match, but a match for what? Camden’s family was clearly in total awe — there aren’t a lot of people who would be willing to donate one of their kidneys!
Leading Up To The Surgery
Days prior to the procedure, Camden’s family brought flowers and many thank-yous to Nancy at the school. “I had friends and family come forward who wanted to donate, but these didn’t work out, for medical reasons or other reasons,” Darreld explained later, “then Miss Nancy approached me.”
The Big Moment
After many interviews with local TV stations that praised Nancy for being selfless, the big moment finally arrived. The teacher said her goodbyes and went to the hospital in order to complete the procedure.
Later, Darrel revealed that he had second thoughts because he was concerned about Nancy’s health. However, she was dead set on it and prepared to risk it all. The best transplant surgeons in Iowa – Zoe Stewart Lewis, MD, Ph.D., Daniel Katz, MD, and Alan Reed, MD – assured Nancy’s fans that the teacher was in the best hands.
The whole time, the nurses and attending surgeons remained by Darreld and Nancy’s side and ensured the pair were calm during the procedure. Darreld explained, “You could tell that every person wanted to be there for you.” But the question is – was the surgery successful?
The procedure was a success! Overwhelmed by Nancy’s generosity, the family was waiting for her when she came to. They all rushed in to kiss and hug her. They promised they will always support her in any way they could and they will be her second family.
What Nancy had given the family was priceless and no one was more grateful than young Camden. Camden was ecstatic, of course. His heart was filled with joy seeing his dad energetic and healthy again after a really long illness.
The little boy just could not hide his happiness and thanked his teacher Nancy. He promised her he would be the best student that she will ever have. However, the family still had to do a few things…
After the successful procedure, Nancy and Darreld decided to take action. The two wanted to increase awareness about how important organ donation is and try to draw attention to the University of Iowa Organ Transplant Center team.
Soon, Nancy’s act of generosity reached the media and they were happy to help the teacher with her new cause. Nancy remains humble. She said in an interview, “I had a co-worker who, years ago, had donated a kidney to someone in her church.”
She added, “It was an important part of her life’s journey, and that was inspirational to me. When I heard about Darreld and Camden’s situation, it just felt like the right thing to do.” Nancy couldn’t have been happier when she found out that she and Darreld were a match.
She stated later, “I was really excited about it. I was ecstatic. I don’t know what I would’ve done for closure if I wasn’t a match.” Perhaps you are wondering what Darreld has to say about the person who saved his life.
“She’s a part of my family for the rest of her life whether she likes it or not,” Darreld said. “The Iowa City team is a part of my family. Everything’s just been amazing, and I hope everyone has the same experience I had.”
He asks, “How do you ever thank someone for saving your life?” He added, “She really is an amazing woman.” Nancy went the extra mile not just as a teacher but also as a human being when she helped Camden’s dad — but teachers are always ready for unusual situations.
Just Another Day
One morning, Mrs. Nabors checked the backpack of one of her students, but she was not ready for what she discovered inside and the reaction of the students. After morning work, Mrs. Nabors remembered her duty to search students’ backpacks and bookbags, so she went along her way.
She found the usual stuff: pencils, books, the occasional snack which was supposed to be placed in their lunchbox. However, one girl looked… nervous. Through the years, bag checks are becoming more and more necessary.
From benign distractions like fidget toys (with notable exceptions) and cell phones to malicious products that do harm on the student body, teachers and security have to be on high alert. However, shouldn’t younger children get a pass?
Unfortunately, these days, both elementary school students and the older students are subjected to the same laws. No student is too young to be considered a criminal. This attitude has caused outrage in a lot of teacher/parent spheres, and parents cannot help but wonder, “Will the accusation cause my children to lose their innocence?”
Lawmakers and security guards may not be able to answer the question of innocence, but one thing is sure: sometimes it is necessary. While most kids who bring banned items do not really do it to harm their classmates, they can still hurt them — through sharp objects, allergies, or simply clumsy fingers.
Jefferson Elementary School
Located in Jefferson County, Georgia, Jefferson Elementary School is just like all the other schools in terms of student safety being a top priority. This is why after the morning announcements, the bags of students in all grades get checked by their teachers.
Most teachers do not think they will discover more than a gaming system. However, Mrs. Nabors came across something unexpected on this day. Mrs. Bobbie Nabors is a Second Grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary school.
Although they are young, she trusts that the kids know what things are appropriate and not appropriate to bring to school. Generally, she doesn’t sweat over checking the bags of students for a bit of extra safety.
Usually, the kids don’t either, but that day she noticed something unusual. That morning, the kids got excited. It was mentioned in the morning announcements that there was an upcoming book fair.
It doesn’t matter how old a child is, book fairs are among the most exciting events at school (Ask anyone who was or is in a public school- they will tell you.) This, to Mrs. Nabors’ regret, distracted her from doing the bag search first.
Since the second graders got wound up, it took a bit to get them to concentrate on their morning work. This is why the routine took longer than usual. As a matter of fact, Mrs. Nabors almost forgot to do the bag search.
One By One
What contraband could the kids possibly smuggle in — a Nintendo? Nevertheless, the teacher started checking their bags one by one. It was more of a game considering how one student was acting.
As Mrs. Nabors checked her bag, the teacher discovered with a start that it was moving. For the uninitiated, backpacks certainly do not move. The teacher reached down to open the bag, concerned about what she might find inside.
When Mrs. Nabors opened the bag, she saw a brown puppy. She took the dog out of the backpack and looked over at the little girl. The teacher could punish her young student for bringing a dog — possibly endangering the kids with pet allergies. However, Mrs. Nabors had another choice…
Mrs. Nabors decided to gently pass the tiny dog around, to her students’ wonderment. Each one had a chance to hold the puppy and pet him. He became a classroom favorite. The little girl was too young to get punished harshly for not being able to part from her tiny animal friend.
One Question Left
However, there was still one question. Mrs. Nabors asked the young girl (whose name remains anonymous) where the dog had come from. Her answer? The most classic and honest, “My mom must’ve put him in there.”
All Good Things Must Come To An End
Of course, she did and the child didn’t have anything to do with it. However, the fun couldn’t last forever. He was definitely a class hit and pretty calm for a puppy, but he couldn’t remain in the classroom forever.
A teacher’s assistant who witnessed the whole thing decided to post the story to her Facebook page, saying: “Everyone, meet Jake. He rode on the bus and stayed tucked quietly away through morning work and announcements until Mrs. Bobbi Nabors was checking bookbags and found him. Then, everyone fell in love.”
She continued, “Jake belongs to a sweet little girl at JES who just couldn’t bring herself to part with him this morning, before school. When Mrs. Nabors opened the little girl’s bookbag this morning, she saw two eyes peering up at her. The little girl told her teacher, ‘My mom must’ve put him in there.’”
It was time for Jake, the puppy, to go home. Mrs. Nabors phoned the girl’s mom to come and pick him up from school so that he could go back to his food, water and puppy pan. However, before he left, the teacher made a decision.
In Need Of A Mascot
Mrs. Nabors knew that the announced book fair was still in need of a mascot, and it seemed Jake was already popular with the impromptu focus group. The adorable puppy became the mascot, and the slogan, “Paws for a Good Book” was a personal touch added to the event.
The Local Service Dog
However, Jake had other effects on the school. Jake is not the only dog that has been at school now. Dottie, a local service dog, and a good working dog, attends to one of the kids. Perhaps Jake wouldn’t be too keen on the shared attention. Let’s have some terrible puns to end this. Jake would probably say, “Paws off, Dottie! The Top Dog is now here!”
