The antiquities were in good shape, which was especially impressive considering how long they had been buried beneath miles and miles of rock. To give you some perspective, the rock on its own was estimated to be almost two billion years old! After being buried beneath miles and miles of rock for thousands of years, the antiquities were in excellent condition, which was particularly surprising considering how long they had been dormant. Simply to put things in perspective, the rock itself was estimated to be around two billion years old!

They found an even more exciting find at the deepest reaches of the Kola Superdeep Borehole than they had anticipated! Experts traditionally considered that the rock beneath our feet changed from granite to basalt at a depth of two to four miles below the surface of the Earth, based on their measurements of earthquake waves.
