Breaking The Record
Despite the fact that Lone Star was unable to locate the object it sought, the expedition managed to keep the record for the deepest hole on Earth for another five years. On June 6, 1979, one of the Kola boreholes, known as SG-3, smashed the previous world record. By 1983, the nine-inch-wide hole had penetrated an amazing 39,000 feet under the surface of the earth, making it the deepest hole in the world.
After That Milestone
Because they had reached such an important milestone, the Kola Peninsula researchers have taken a break from their work. A year was taken off from working on it in order to accommodate a larger number of guests to come and experience the spectacular site.
