Getting Up Early
When a former soldier tells you that they slept in, what they probably mean is they got up at 7:00. Getting up early is something many soldiers pick up in basic training and carries to deployment. Also, it kind of sticks with them forever.

Popping Smoke
Similar to what can be seen in movies, “popping smoke” creates a shield or diversion and soldiers do this so that they can get into position. Outside the military, a soldier saying they’re “popping smoke” is telling you they’re leaving.
