The Hit Song
“Layla” appeared on Clapton’s album with his post-Cream outfit Derek and the Dominoes. The album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was released in 1970 and is often regarded as Clapton’s greatest. It also contained his rendition of Billy Myles’ song “Have You Ever Loved a Woman,” the lyrics of which express a crush on a close friend’s wife.
What It Meant
In a 2005 interview with CNN, Boyd recounted Clapton and the song he composed about her: “I think that he was extraordinarily raw at the time. He’s such an amazing musician that he can express his feelings via music in such a way that the listener can sense them immediately. It passes through you.”
