Walter’s new friends did not really engage in petty theft but instead, committed much worse crimes. He soon found out that his friends robbed banks and had managed not to get caught because they drove to North Carolina, where there was more relaxed security.

Walter and his friends initially kept getting away with bank robbing, and he recalled, “After every score, we’d hand out on the strip at 14th and T [Streets], and act like big timers. We felt like gangsters.” However, Walter admitted in a moment of honesty: “I have nobody to blame but myself. I just enjoyed the feeling of having money.”
