Because of the negative reports that Walter received, he was assigned one of the prison’s worst jobs. He and a few other prisoners had to clean up the roads and to do this, they needed to wake up before the rest of the prisoners, get onto a bus, and travel to Raleigh in order to pick up trash.

He recalled, “It was awful. People would be throwing hamburgers and milkshakes at you. And it was almost winter, so it was starting to get cold.” In spite of the bad conditions, he actually saw this as an opportunity. “That’s when I started planning and plotting,” Walter said.
