The members of the British Royal Family have followed the same set of fashion protocols for centuries. Yes, there is an official dress code for the Royal Family. We’ve ranked some of the most stunning royal dresses for you to peruse.
Princess Diana in Catherine Walker
Catherine Walker designed the white silk, pearl, and sequin gown that Princess Diana wore during her 1989 visit to Hong Kong. In reference to the matching bolero (ah, the ’80s), the press at the time dubbed the dress “the Elvis dress.” This style may not be to everyone’s liking, but we applaud the risk taken by our favorite Royal outlaw. Catherina Walker, the dress’s designer, recalled in 2012, “She shone in the dress and the dress shone around her in a shimmering column of glistening pearls.”
Princess Anne in Floral Ruffles
Princess Anne, the Queen’s only daughter, is seen here wearing a ruffled floral dress and white evening gloves, both reminiscent of the 1970s. Princess Margaret looks almost bohemian at an event in London’s Dorchester Hotel, save for her signature chignon. As a young woman, Princess Anne competed in equestrian events and won three medals at the European Eventing Championships: two silver and one gold. Anne was the first member of the British royal family to compete in the Olympics, which is quite an accomplishment in itself.
