The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has been the subject of much debate since joining the British royal family. The intense scrutiny and pressure ultimately led to the actress’s decision to leave the UK. Markle, however, follows in the footsteps of her mother-in-law and regularly breaks royal fashion rules. While visiting Fiji, the Duchess chose to wear a Safiyaa gown. Royals from the United Kingdom often dress in a way that pays homage to the country they are visiting. This dress was inspired by the blue of the Fijian flag.

Princess Margaret’s romantic history was complicated. She had her heart set on marrying Peter Townsend, a senior official in the royal household who was 15 years her senior. Despite opposition from the church and the government, she wed Anthony Armstrong-Jones in 1960. Margaret and her husband go to the New York City Ballet in this 1974 photo.
