Captain Kirk’s Future Birthplace: Riverside, Iowa

Fans of Star Trek are aware that the main character and captain of the Starship Enterprise, Captain James T. Kirk, is rumored to have been born in the city of Riverside, Iowa. As a direct consequence of this, Star Trek fans from all over the world travel to this very unimportant community in Iowa to visit a private yard behind a modest house that contains a monument. This memorial is a plaque in the shape of a gravestone that reads, “Future Birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, March 22, 2228.” Not only that, but the creator of the program, Gene Roddenberry, along with the mayor of Riverside, Iowa, recently decided that a tiny town in Iowa should be regarded as Kirk’s birthplace. So not only is this something that is not true, but it is also something that is a genuine trap for tourists.
