Looking Into Surrogacy
Now that adoption was out of the question, they decided to check out another option: surrogacy. Kevin and Nicole began to do their homework and read up on the process. They were initially disappointed to find out it cost $75,000. Apparently, it was an even more expensive option than adoption. The couple remained hopeful and began brainstorming for anyone they knew who might do it for free. She explained, “We had heard stories that sisters carried and mothers carried, but I don’t have a sister, and my mother is over the age.”
Surprising New York Surrogacy Laws
They were surprised to hear about the state laws about surrogacy in New York. Kevin and Nicole did not expect for it to be illegal to hire a surrogate within the state. If they wanted to make it work, they needed to pay someone who did not live inside the state. However, this was also problematic since it would be costlier to travel to and from the hospital. It goes without saying that the ideal arrangement was to have a surrogate who lived close by.
