Shemp’s Back
Shemp rejoined the Stooges after Curly’s first stroke. Shemp found that directors and studio heads wanted him to fill a role that Curly had previously occupied in films of the era. Curly was the one who got the biggest laughs from the audience, but Shemp wasn’t interested in copying his brother. Besides, even when he made an effort, critics and viewers alike were underwhelmed by his output. Not long after, during filming, Shemp tragically passed away. To make it seem like Shemp had finished these movies, stand-ins were hired and their footage was edited together with old Shemp footage.
An Injury From Childhood
Larry is typically depicted in the short films as the most musically talented of the trio. His abilities on the violin were certainly one of a kind, but the story of how he developed them is a little unsettling. Larry’s dad was a jeweler who etched his pieces with acid. One day, when Larry was still a toddler, he tried to drink the acid and his father had to smack it out of his hand. Larry’s arm was corroded by the acid when it landed on it. Larry’s dad sent him to violin lessons to help strengthen his arm after an accident, and the lessons seemed to help.
