Dakota went one step further after the heroics that had already occurred. Dakota eventually had to dismount his vehicle and continue on foot due to the fire and chaos. Dakota continued on foot in the direction where the cut-off soldiers were supposed to be. He prevented their capture after locating their bodies and defeating a Taliban insurgent.

So, how did Dakota end up in the situation he did? Then to be awarded the Medal of Honor? Dakota was born and raised in Columbia, Kentucky, and after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps at a recruitment station. Dakota completed his basic training after that and was well on his way to becoming a soldier.
