The Two Popes (2019)
The Two Popes is based on a play called The Pope by Anthony McCarten. Anthony Hopkins plays Pope Benedict XVI, who was infamous for abdicating his papacy after the leaks scandal in Vatican. Jonathan Pryce plays Cardinal Bergoglio, who resigned as Archbishop as well. This tense drama premiered in late August 2019 and later had a limited theatrical release in the US. The movie is now on Netflix. The screenplay was written by Anthony McCarten, and Fernando Meirelles directed the film.
Tolkien (2019)
Famous for the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “The Hobbit”, author J.R.R. Tolkien is the focus of the biopic Tolkien, which was released to high expectations in 2019. So far, 150 million copies of Tolkien’s novels have been sold since they were first published in the ‘50s. Tolkien depicts the early life of the author and ends (no spoilers) with Tolkien becoming a professor at Oxford. The film had a $20 million budget but only made $9 million.
