Surtsey Island – Iceland
The island is one of the newest islands in the world on the Icelandic coast. Only a few scientists on the island are allowed to conserve its growing biodiversity, which currently supports vegetation and puffins. It is one of the only UNESCO World Heritage places you possibly would never get an opportunity to explore.
Poveglia Island – Italy
Poveglia Island near Venice has a long tradition of tragedy, insanity, and terror. Throughout the 18th century, bubonic plague days, Italians shipped their dying to this island to avoid epidemic spreading. Between 1922 to 1968, a psychiatric asylum operated nearby, where tradition claims a psychiatrist abused and murdered several people. This small, demented island will bury as many as 100,000 corpses.
