Country music seldomly talked about AIDS because the majority marked it as taboo. And yet, Reba McEntire did not join the trend. The country artist released an album titled Read My Mind last 1994. It had a controversial song that was called She Thinks His Name Was John. The song revolved around the story of a lady who got AIDS after a drunken one-night stand. It was this song that proved that Reba McEntire was different from the other musicians, and she was brave to discuss social issues using art as a medium. Reba McEntire was not afraid to discuss other controversial issues like domestic abuse, illegal immigration, mercy killing, and neglect of the elderly.

A Rough Patch

There was a time when the music career of Reba McEntire went through a rough patch. Her career moved downward since the release of her 19th album called Starting Over. However, there was not much effort in the making of that album because she did not bother to create new music for it. Reba McEntire only compiled the original recordings of her favorite songs. The reason for this was that she wanted to observe her twentieth year in the country music industry. It was unfortunate that the critics reacted negatively, and there was only one song that made it to the top 10. However, even though most were disappointed, the album still reached platinum. Reba McEntire somehow managed to turn everything in just a year.
