Muddy footprints
He noticed muddy footsteps carpeting his floor in the empty hallway. David was perplexed since they appeared to be from a man wearing no shoes. Why would someone wander about barefoot? However, he didn’t linger on that idea for very long because he then heard loud noises coming from his kitchen.

David made his way cautiously down his hallway and into his kitchen. Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t avoid being heard when he trod on the wooden floorboards in his home. Fortunately for him, the intruder was preoccupied with something else and didn’t hear David as he crept around. He had stopped to hear if the intruder had heard him.
