Not Knowing a Foreign Language
We live in a country where you can travel for more than 2,500 kilometres without leaving. Over American soil, you can fly in a straight line for 2,802 miles. We don’t grow up studying languages the way people do when countries are packed together like New England states. Texas is here. There are entire countries that are smaller than Texas. There are quite a few of them. Is our monolingualism healthy or beneficial? Most likely not. But it’s understandable, and it’s unmistakably American.
Loudness
Whether it’s conversational volume on a daily basis or shouting across a room to attract someone’s attention, Americans haven’t quite cracked the “inside voice” thing yet. If your accent does not give you away, your volume will.
