Not Knowing The Customs
It all makes sense. We live in a huge country, and while we do have a lot of distinctions in accents, food, and culture, we’re not used to researching before we travel. Nonetheless, it’s a good idea. Instead of expecting everyone to speak English, learn as much as you can about the language. Learn about manners and conventions. (Take extra care not to make any indecent gestures.) You’ll have more fun and get along better if you go in knowing what to expect.
When They Meet Other Americans Abroad
When Americans encounter fellow Americans abroad, they may appear to an outsider to be meeting long-lost relatives. But no. These are total strangers. They’ll start shouting. They’ll chat about where they’re from. And they’ll let everyone know they’re from the United States.
