Dangerous Stunts

In their movies, The Three Stooges frequently performed perilous stunts. These were usually staged for the camera, but occasionally they were real. For instance, Larry got a fountain pen stuck in the back of his head during a scene in which he was used as a human dartboard. Ouch! After another botched gag left Curly with stitches in his forehead, he returned to work in a wig to hide the bruising. The Stooges made a clear stand while shooting Three Little Pigskins (1934). The plan all along was to have a team of professional football players charge at them and stampede them. As a result of their refusal, the stunt doubles used in the scene sustained serious injuries, including broken bones and cracked ribs.

The Stooges’ physical quirks were often exploited for laughs. However, one of these wasn’t staged; it was the result of an accident the patient had as a child. Curly’s limp was one of his most endearing characteristics. He shot himself in the ankle while cleaning a rifle as a kid, and though he worked to make it funnier in the shorts and live acts, it was actually natural.
