Christine Jorgensen – ‘50s War Veteran Turned Actress
Christine Jorgensen and Billy Tipton lived around the same period, yet their lives couldn’t have been more different. Jorgensen served as a male throughout WWII, but after the war, she identified as a woman. Then, in the 1950s, Jorgensen made history as the first transgender woman to have sex reassignment surgery. A Danish doctor conducted the surgery in Copenhagen, and Jorgensen returned to the United States an entirely different person. Jorgensen became an actor after fully transitioning and spoke frankly about her journey to her actual identity. She was accepted by Hollywood, and while she never married, she did find love in a few men.
