Axolotl
Talk about one strange salamander! Like a permanent teenager, it retains the majority of its youthful amphibious features: a tail, an aquatic lifestyle, and external gills. However, it will turn into a more or less normal salamander if you inject it with other salamander hormones. Scientists love it for its limb regeneration properties, this fancy trick has not prevented it from becoming endangered.
Helmeted Hornbill
This bird is critically endangered because folks just cannot get enough of the horn on its bill. That weird part of its head is a “casque.” Folks hunt these birds for the casques, which are used for jewelry and art. Helmeted hornbills use them to fight midair over the forests of Southeast Asia. Sadly, they are hot targets for poachers. From 2011, 6,000 of these birds have been killed to feed demand in China.
