The Pianist (2002)
Released in 2002, The Pianist stars Adrien Brody as Jewish radio station pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman, who was living in Poland. The film chronicles Szpilman’s struggle while watching the Nazis tear down his beloved Warsaw. Forced into the Warsaw Ghetto for a short time, Szpilman gets separated from his family because of Operation Reinhard and he is released. He hides in the city ruins, avoiding getting captured by the Nazis. The film is set between 1939 and 1945. Ronald Harwood adapted the screenplay from Szpilman’s autobiography.
Out of Africa (1985)
Meryl Streep stars in Out of Africa, which tells the story of Karen Blixen. She and her husband,Bror, moves to Africa, with the plan of becoming a dairy farmer. However, Bror spends the money of the family on purchasing a coffee plantation. He turns out to be somewhat of a villain and Karen has an affair with a hunter named Denys (played by Robert Redford). The film becomes a romantic tragedy, since Denys realizes that he’s not that into Karen. The movie is based on Karen’s autobiography published in 1937, which she wrote using the pseudonym Isak Dinesen.
