Hidden Figures (2016)
The astronaut John Glenn received all of the credit for going to space, but the feat was actually accomplished by three Black women: Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Katherine Johnson. These female NASA scientists put together everything, and developed all the needed code and science to get the astronaut into space. Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, and Taraji P. Henson portrayed the brilliant women, who got overlooked due to their gender and race. Hidden Figures is a revolutionary film because it depicts the truth behind who should be credited for one of the greatest operations of NASA: Black women, not white men. The film took home an NAACP Image Award.
Reversal of Fortune (1990)
Released in 1990, Reversal of Fortune is based on the story of Claus von Bulow. Claus’ wife, Sunny von Bulow (portrayed by Glenn Close), fell into a coma and the prime suspect was Claus. He was later found guilty in the murder of his wife but was granted a retrial due to a technicality. Claus hired a famous defense attorney by the name of Alan Dershowitz to help overturn the verdict. Even though Dershowitz didn’t personally believe that Claus was innocent, the lawyer enlisted the help of some of his own Harvard Law students to have the verdict overturned.
