Apollo 13 (1995)
Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, this film is based on the lunar mission called Apollo 13. Hanks plays Jim Lovell, who goes on the mission to the moon with Fred Haise and Jack Swigert (played by Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon, respectively). Everything goes according to plan but an oxygen tank explodes. Technical problems threatens the crew’s survival, and Apollo 13 chronicles their harrowing trip back to earth in a “broken” rocket-ship. A SAG awardee for Best Motion Picture, the film is adapted from Lovell’s autobiography, Lost Moon, which details the incident.

The Farewell (2019)
Lulu Wang’s autobiography titled, “What You Don’t Know” is the basis of The Farewell. The film tells the touching story of Bill, an American-born woman who travels to China in order to say goodbye to her dying grandmother. However, the only person in their family who does not know that she is dying is her grandmother herself. The family returns pretending to have a fake wedding while saying a stealthy goodbye. Lulu Wang directed the movie and Awkwafina stars in the lead role. Both funny and sad, the film won Best Actress at the Golden Globes.
