The Big Sick (2017)
This Oscar-nominated movie stars Kumail Nanjiani, a Pakistani comic that falls in love with Emily Gordon (portrayed by Zoe Kazan), a grad student. Nanjiani’s family is super traditionally Muslim, and he gets concerned with what his own parents might think of her. However, Emily gets sick and slips into a coma, and Kumail bonds with her parents. Produced by Judd Apatow, the romance movie had a box office gross of $56.4 million and was nominated for an Oscar. It also won a Prix du Public UBS, Independent Spirit Award, and Critics’ Choice Movie Award. It is based on the real-life romance of Nanjiani and Gordon.

In Cinderella Man, Russell Crowe stars as an ex-boxer named James J. Braddock, who tries his best to survive the Great Depression. He is a day laborer before his fate changes. He meets his former manager, who offers Braddock a fight against an up-and-coming boxer in the ring. Despite all the odds, Braddock wins and decides to become a boxer full-time. This movie is titled after Braddock’s nickname, which is “Cinderella Man,” in reference to his personal “rags to riches” story. The film depicts his life as he works on defeating the reigning champion boxer Max Baer.
