I’m Not There (2007)

This unconventional film employs different techniques (and actors) to show the life and different public personas of singer Bob Dylan. Cate Blanchett played Dylan’s post-electric phase while other Dylan interpretations were portrayed by Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, Marcus Carl Franklin, and Ben Whishaw. Directed by experienced filmmaker Todd Haynes, the edgy art film was produced by seven small independent production companies. The now-defunct Weinstein Company distributed the movie, which only made $11.7 million despite having a budget of $20 million.

The Theory of Everything (2014)

This biographical film is about Stephen Hawking (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne), a physicist and researcher that changed scientific history with his various breakthroughs. In the film, the life of the renowned scientist gets the Hollywood effect since the movie does not only focus on his accomplishments but also his romantic life and illness. The Theory of Everything took elements from a book that Hawking’s wife wrote about their life together. Distributed by indie and foreign movie stalwart Focus Features, the film won several Academy Awards and had a box office gross of $123.7 million.
