The Express (2008)

The sports drama The Express won Best Sports Movie at the ESPY Awards. The movie stars Rob Brown and Dennis Quaid. It is based on the biography titled, “Ernie Davis: The Elmira Express”, by Robert Gallagher. Football player Ernie Davis overcame obstacle after obstacle and became a player for Syracuse in the NCAA. He went on to become one of the best players in Syracuse history. In 1961, he became the first Black player who won a Heisman. Sadly, Davis was diagnosed with leukemia the following year and passed away at the age of 23, before getting a chance to play pro football in the NFL.

Invictus (2009)

Invictus has become one of most celebrated movies of Morgan Freeman. The actor stars as Nelson Mandela, the well-known South African leader unjustly imprisoned for 27 years. After Mandela’s release from jail, he had the difficult task of making his country united in spite of the deep racial divisions because of Apartheid. The film chronicles how Mandela worked together with the captain of the South African rugby team Francois Pienaar (portrayed by Matt Damon) to try and get rid of the racial division which plagued South Africa. The Clint Eastwood film was honored with the Paul Selvin Award.
