Charlie Wilson’s War (2007)

Charlie Wilson’s War stars big names including Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. This movie is a classic “What could go wrong?” type and features Hanks as U.S. Representative Charlie Wilson. The congressman seeks out Joanne Herring (played by Roberts) to help him get more funding for Afghanistan militants who were fighting against the Soviet Union back in the ‘80s. Wilson, Herring, and CIA agent Gust Avrakotos (played by Hoffman) become successful in their attempts at funding the Afghanistan militants. In the ‘80s, the militants were called “freedom fighters” or “Mujahideen” but later down the road, they would be known by another name: the Taliban.

Great Balls of Fire! (1989)

Jerry Lee Lewis is definitely a rock ‘n roll legend, and Great Balls of Fire depicts how he came to have such an impact in the music world. Dennis Quaid stars as Lewis in the film, which The New York Times described as a “cleaned-up” Lewis biography. The movie starts after Lewis lands a music deal with Sun Studio. His cousin Jimmy, portrayed by Alec Baldwin, attempts to convince Lewis not enter the music business but failed. Released in 1989, the biography glosses over the less savory parts of Lewis’ life.
