Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
In Dog Day Afternoon, Al Pacino plays inexperienced criminal Sonny Wortzik, who was the leader of a failed bank robbery in Brooklyn, New York. The film depicts the unsuccessful bank robbery, which leads to a standoff with the NYPD and FBI and also a media circus. However, this isn’t just about money, and a series of flashbacks reveal Wortzik’s real motives. Sidney Lumet signed on as the director of Dog Day Afternoon, with Frank Pierson writing the screenplay. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards and won the Best Original Screenplay.
Selena (1997)
Selena tells the heartbreaking story of Selena Quintanilla Perez (portrayed by Jennifer Lopez), a singer born into a musical Texan family. The Tejana singer went on to have international success, but earned the ire of her father, Abraham (portrayed by Edward James Olmos), when she fell for her guitarist. Music fans will know the story of Selena, which has a really tragic end. Selena had a box office gross of $60 million. Gregory Nava directed this Golden Globe-nominated film.
