Donnie Brasco (1997)
FBI agent Joseph Piston was tasked to infiltrate the New York City Mafia in its heyday. Using the name Donnie Brasco (played by Johnny Depp), he developed a friendship with Lefty Ruggiero (portrayed by Al Pacino). First released in 1997, the film is about the FBI agent who is grappling with turning his newfound friend to the authorities. The New York Times described the movie as “crackling good.” The movie was released for the second time in 2012 at a show called Mafia’s Greatest Hits, a collection of the greatest mobster films to date.
Malcolm X (1992)
Directed by Spike Lee, Malcolm X centers around the Black liberation activist and it brought home an NAACP Image Award. Denzel Washington was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Malcolm X. The biographical drama depicts several periods of the life of the Civil Rights hero, including the time he was imprisoned in the ‘50s and his later assassination. “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”, which was written by Malcolm X, is the basis of this film. Alex Haley is credited as a co-writer for doing the editing.
