Girl, Interrupted (1999)

Winona Ryder plays Susanna Kaysen in Girl, Interrupted, which tells the story of Kaysen’s time in a mental institution where she was placed as a young woman. Angelina Jolie co-stars as Lisa, a fun but dangerous, fellow patient that belongs in the institution more than Kaysen does. Released in 1999, the movie was awarded an Oscar and received nominations for a number of Golden Globes and a Teen Choice Award. Kaysen’s autobiography was the basis of the screenplay.

Almost Famous (2000)

The coming-of-age story of Almost Famous is about Cameron Crowe. He was also the movie’s director and screenplay writer. It is semi-autobiographical, since Crowe was wrote for Rolling Stone magazine when he was a teenager. Almost Famous shows the assignment of a fifteen-year-old music fan to interview Stillwater. The teen writer goes on tour with the band, despite his very protective mother’s objections. The film got nominated for several Academy Awards, winning Best Original Screenplay.
