Bird (1988)
Directed by Clint Eastwood, Bird tells the life story of jazz musician Charlie Parker. It is widely known that Eastwood is a jazz fan, and it is easy to tell he poured his heart and soul into the film, which chronicles Parker’s struggles as he worked on becoming famous as well as the tough relationship he had with his wife. The movie also depicted the musician’s struggle with drugs. Forest Whitaker plays Parker, who died at just 34 years old from an overdose. Released in 1988, the film earned Eastwood a Golden Globe Award for Best Director.
The Glorias (2020)
Noted feminist scholar Gloria Steinem had a big impact on the feminist movement. The Glorias chronicles her life and her struggles to get her voice heard. Young Steinem is portrayed by Alicia Vikander, while Julianne Moore stars as the older Steinem. Directed by Julie Taymor, the movie has other famous faces including Bette Midler, Janelle Monae, Timothy Hutton, and Lorraine Toussaint. The screenplay was written by Julie Taymor and Sarah Ruhl but Steinem had the final say since it was her biopic.
