First Man (2018)

Nominated for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards, First Man features Ryan Gosling playing astronaut Neil Armstrong. its screenplay is based on the book titled, “The First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong”. The biopic, which was directed by Damien Chazelle, starts with Armstrong becoming an engineer in NASA and depicts the years of training he went through, consistently risking his life when doing test flights. The movie also features the famous Apollo 11, which sent Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin into space. Released in October 2018, the film had a box office gross of $105.7 million.

Lady Sings The Blues (1972)

In the 1972 biographical drama Lady Sings the Blues, Diana Ross plays jazz singer Billie Holiday. The film chronicles Holiday’s traumatic and difficult youth as well as her early tries to become a well-known singer. While the movie does show her becoming famous, it also reveals fame’s ugly side. Her tumultuous relationship with her manager-boyfriend, Louis McKay, and her severe drug addiction caused her to live in peril constantly. Produced by Motown Records, this Oscar-nominated film is based on Holiday’s biography and was directed by Sidney J. Furie.
