Brian’s Song (1971)

Brian’s Song stars James Caan and Billy Dee Williams as Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers respectively. Piccolo and Sayers were NFL teammates (the Chicago Bears) during the ‘60s. Even in those days, there was racial tension and segregation in professional football, and the film depicts the bond that grew between a white athlete (Piccolo) and a Black athlete (Sayers). Their wives also become friends, and the four’s close bond becomes a sort of symbol of racial harmony during the strained ‘60s. The movie’s screenplay was written by Gale Sayers.
